Rare Variegated Flycatcher Sighting!

TAS President_ Joe F. Barros
The  7th recorded sighting of a variegated flycatcher in North America took place last month on a #TASbirding walk at Evergreen Cemetery in Fort Lauderdale. Sightings of the South American Bird are rare and accidental north of the equator. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests, subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, and heavily degraded former forest, so it does makes sense to see one here in South Florida. This passerin belongs to tyrant flycatchers (Tyrannidae) family, the largest family of birds in the Americas, with more than 400 species. This is the only species remaining in the genus Empidonomus.

America's healthiest (and greenest!) grocery store chain talks the talk,  and  walks the walk. Whether supporting Homestead Farmers, Keys Fishermen or Florida Ranchers, Whole Foods Coral Gables keeps it local. As consumers of the end-product, we eat fresher, cleaner food; our personal carbon footprint is significantly reduced; and we support our regional economy.

In keeping with its ethos -- "Whole Foods, Whole People, Whole Planet" -- our near neighbor (located just 3 blocks north of our campus on Red Road) partners with TAS biannually to present our signature "Walk in the Woods with Wine & Whisk" dinner series. Orchestrated in tandem with
Whisk Gourmet  Chef-cofounder Brendan Connor and A Joy Wallace Catering, the dinner proceeds help TAS maintain our 3-acre "green island" and perpetuate our Mission " To conserve and restore South Florida ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife and their habitats."  Visit the Website

Conservation Committee Meeting @TAS
Wednesday, November 25, 7-9:30pm

We come together to do the little things that make a big difference, and to tackle the big things that take a village on the 4th Wednesday of every month. Help us peck away at the challenging conservation issues of our time. With your assistance, we can build capacity, infrastructure and increase our reach!

Please collaborate in and contribute to our Mission to conserve South Florida's wildlife, habitats and natural resources. You don't need to be a scientist or TAS member to know that clean water, green space and solar energy are good things.
