From The Pastor's Desk:
On November 13th, our youth will be singing a song called "It's A Right & Good & Joyful Thing" at our 10:00 AM Prayer, Praise & Thanksgiving service. It's the weekend that we will pray over the Estimate of Sharing cards (some churches call them pledges) that hopefully each household will offer to God for the coming year. I don't know about you, but for me, the act of giving makes me feel more alive. It's a mix of connecting with my world and making a difference; of helping my Church family to change lives; of co-creating with God in making opportunities possible; of being organized in my own finances to know what I plan to give; of giving back to God with awe and gratitude for all God has given me. All of these feel right and good and joyful.
That said, these days are uncertain. War in Ukraine, high gasoline prices, crazy inflation and stress on small businesses, more jobs being put on each person able to work, school test scores falling, Covid waxing and waning - and all of these falling on people doing their honest best. To give financially can feel scary, and to not give can feel empty. I hear the sentiment from most places - "no matter what we do, we can't win." Into this stress and uncertainty and sorrow, the Gospel enters: it's only in uncertainty that faith comes alive, and it's only when we can't win that we turn away from our isolated self towards God and what we can do together. It was the cross that led to resurrection, and it is in our darkest times that Christ's light shines clearest.
And it's when we hear the Gospel that we can respond with the words our kids will sing: "It's a right, and good, and joyful thing, to give God thanks." Finding joy in partnering with God, doing what we can, seeking hope in challenging times and sharing that hope with others - "It's a right and good and joyful thing - Amen!"
Peace,
Pastor Wendolyn

November Bible Study
Wednesdays,
At 11:00 AM And 6:30 PM
November 2nd, 9th, And 16th
During November, we are exploring the book, The Spirituality Of Gratitude, by Joshua Choonmin Kang. Copies are available in the church office. Books for November's study cost $12.00 and can be paid to Lord Of Life.
Here is a summary of The Spirituality Of Gratitude. Deep gratitude springs up from within, writes pastor and Korean author Joshua Choonmin Kang. To become truly grateful is incredibly difficult, but the difficulty of the process makes the results all the more lovely. God invites us to enter into this world of thankfulness at every moment in our lives, even in the hard times - perhaps especially then.
The book is divided into short readings and arranged into 5 chapters. Each week
we will discuss a portion of the book and ask that you read the sections listed
in the attachment (the link is below) before each session in order to enhance your learning and our conversation. You may want to read a few chapters each day as part of your daily devotions.

Study and discussion questions, prayers and reflections help us to remember that Christ’s birth among us brings new life to us each and every day.

Number The Stars
by Lois Lowry
This is an unforgettable Newbery Medal-winning novel from Lois Lowry. As the German troops begin their campaign to "relocate" all the Jews of Denmark, Annemarie Johansen's family takes in Annemarie's best friend, Ellen Rosen, and conceals her as part of the family. Through the eyes of ten-year-old Annemarie, we watch as the Danish Resistance smuggles almost the entire Jewish population of Denmark, nearly seven thousand people, across the sea to Sweden. The heroism of an entire nation reminds us that there was pride and human decency in the world even during a time of terror and war. A modern classic of historical fiction, Number the Stars has won generations of fans.

Helping Hands is a monthly ministry to make sandwiches for the homeless served by Christian Caring Center. It meets the last Wednesday of each month. Jobs are easy – putting meat and cheese in a roll, placing sandwiches in a baggie, counting the sandwiches, and putting them in a grocery bag. Everyone gets a small, easy task and a lot gets done quickly while we share some time together. We keep everyone safe by wearing gloves and masks, spacing ourselves, and venting the room. All are invited to join us! If you have any questions, please contact Janell Reich.

MORE Athletic Shoe Collection
MORE stands for Modular Organic Regenerative Environments. The group is 100% funded by recycled athletic shoes, keeping them out of landfills. Donated shoes are sold to participating vendors in developing countries. Proceeds regenerate forests and jump start small farming co-ops in needy regions. This creates retail jobs while stimulating free enterprise. MORE provides basic supplies, tools, seeds (fruit-bearing mango, papaya, avocado and income producing mahogany), and agroforestry training to poor farming families, school children and rural villages.
You can contribute your used sneakers or athletic shoes by placing them in the collection box located in the church entryway. Please sneaker-type used footware only, no dress or other shoes.

Walk For The Cure:
Thank You!!!!!
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Thank you for helping our Lord Of Life Making Strides team fight to end breast cancer! We have grateful hearts for everyone who baked, purchased baked goods, donated at LOL, and donated online. With online donations of $313.25 we were ranked 52 out of 119 teams on Saturday. Then at registration on Sunday, October 9, we turned in a check for $444 from Lord of Life ($294 bake sale and $150 donations) - bringing our current total to $757.25! We will let you know when the team rankings are updated. The online donation portal will remain open through December. Joyful striders were Penny Miller, Barbara Ma, Janice Jones, and Ed and Lu Hourihan. It was a beautiful day on the boardwalk and many stopped to take pictures of our "Flag Of Hope." It was the only one we saw! Blessings to all.

Wednesdays Away
If you are looking for a time of spiritual renewal, the Cross Roads staff will, once again, offer an opportunity throughout the year with their Wednesdays Away program. Our time together includes prayer and conversation, led by a spiritual director and focusing on a different spiritual practice or theme each month. These retreats are open to all people interested in exploring new faith practices. Attend one or attend all—and be sure to invite friends to join you.
We are excited to share that we will return to offering in-person gatherings for the 2022-2023 season. Each retreat will be held from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM in person at Cross Roads (check-in will begin at 9:30 AM). The cost is $50 per in-person gathering (includes lunch). Out of love for our community and in response to the current pandemic, we have established the following protocols for the in-person Wednesdays Away sessions: participants must be vaccinated and show proof of vaccination as well as negative results from a COVID test taken within 72 hours of the event date. Stewardship Update:
Grace In Action
All church members should have received a mailing with additional information about this year's Stewardship Campaign. If you did not receive the mailing, please contact the church office. The mailing includes an Estimate Of Sharing Card (EOS) for your 2023 pledge. We will dedicate the cards during each service on the weekend of November 12th and 13th. Please return your cards to the church prior to this weekend so that they can be included in the dedication. If you are unable to make an estimate of sharing at this time, please return the EOS card with the box checked which would indicate that. It is very important that ALL CHURCH MEMBERS RETURN THEIR EOS CARDS! As part of the financial planning process for 2023, the information from the EOS cards is vital. Thank you in advance for your continuing support of Lord Of Life and its Mission and Ministry!

LifeLines Ending Song:
This ending song is ELW #829. It is an upbeat reminder to thank the Lord for our many blessings. The lyrics and tune were penned by Wilbur "Bill" La Motta (1919-1960). He was one of the most talented pianists, organists, composers and arrangers from the Virgin Islands, thus the calypso style of the music. His musical talent was recognized at an early age by family members, most of whom were also gifted musicians. By age five, Bill was proficient on the organ and beginning to play the clarinet. He enjoyed an illustrious career and wrote more than 400 songs! It is performed by Tim McNabb who is the Music Director at the Lutheran Church Of The Resurrection in Halifax, Canada. Tim has been an actor, a piano teacher, and a banker. Enjoy and give thanks!
