Spending Time in Devotion

I recently received the sad news about the death of Phil Lesh, the bass player for the band the Grateful Dead. Phil was almost 84 years old. He wrote one of my favorite all time songs entitled a “Box of Rain” that he penned while driving back and forth caring for his dying father back in the early 1970’s. I met Phil Lesh in a small gathering at the Rock Hall probably 20 years ago. I told him I often found inspiration for the sermons I write from the poetry and lyrics in the Grateful Dead songs. He paused and stared at me and then broke out into a huge roll of laughter. He then proceeded to write down a list of other songs I should use for my sermon writing. (Unfortunately I lost that list in one of my moves.) Man he was super cool. And I loved the 30-45 seconds we spent together.

I was talking with Mike Toth at the Foodbank last month about Phil Lesh’s death and he shared with me a video of him playing that song, “Box of Rain,” with his daughter and friends. It inspired me to get my guitar and give it my own try. I broke two strings. Awesome. But sometimes things have to break before something new can come in (I ordered new strings on Amazon).  Music has such a power to bring people together. It is something Mike Toth and I talk about often. Music brought my two boys, Ethan and Noah, and I together for our one time only concert. Ethan was 8 and played my djembe and Noah was 5 and played two hollow dog bones like rhythm sticks. The Grateful Dead has two percussionists and I did too!

I find music healing and unifying. It brings together people from all sorts of backgrounds and it is a gift from God. And music allowed me to meet this guy named Phil for 45 seconds. It was not long that he gave me his attention, but he truly gave me all of his attention. There is so much in life that can tear us apart but music has always helped me find a connection with people who are like me and people who are very different. The closing lyrics to “Box of Rain”:

And it's just a box of rain

Or a ribbon for your hair

Such a long, long time to be gone

And a short time to be there.

Our time together is precious. Let us find excuses to come together. Music is my excuse. “Such a long, long time to be gone and a short time to be there.”

This week we are continuing on in our new series "Take a Bow," which looks at the tension between living a life of humility and confidence at the same time. This week we will talk about how following Jesus is the only way we can find real rest. Students are constantly comparing themselves to those around them and to the social standards they believe are expected of them. We will talk about how to give these stressors and burdens to Christ in concrete ways and draw closer to Christ. We will focus on Matthew 11:28-29.

Christmas Activity Guide

As we inch closer to Christmas we all know how busy the holiday season becomes. This year I'm hoping that we can all find sometime in our busy lives to prioritize our faith. Teens especially are at a stage in their faith development where they are deciding what they believe and how that belief is going to live out in their own lives as they grow toward adulthood. With this in mind we are hoping that the following Advent devotional can help your family put Christ at the center of the holiday season. If you click here you will be taken to an Advent devotional that goes through the different names for Jesus in the scriptures. This is geared towards students ages 8-18 but can be adapted to any age. This isn't meant to be another "to-do" on your already busy schedules but a way to focus and enhance the season of celebration. If you would like a printed copy of the devotional either sign up on the sheet at the Welcome Table or email Jen at mzumcstudent@gmail.com and she will get one to you.

Preschool

Contact: Sharon Paige paigesharon42@gmail.com

This week the children will be introduced to the letter “H” with many unique and creative learning activities which will include hammers, a hungry hippo, and some “Horsing” around a hen house! We will count hearts, sequence hamburger patterns, and find some hens, hats, and hotdogs buried in some hay. We will all join in on a “silly hat” parade on Wednesday and begin to craft our special “Thankful Turkey” we will be bringing to our Pen Pals at Heritage Crossing Retirement Center. Our Chapel lesson will have a learning another Fruit of the Spirit: Happy!! (I mean JOY of course) Hooray for letter “H”!
