Members of House & Senate Take Action to Block New Joint Employer Rule

There may be a change to the recently announced Joint Employer rule announced by the NLRB. Members of the House and Senate introduced legislation to block the final Joint Employer rule using the Congressional Review Act (CRA). This legislative tool enables Congress to disapprove a  final rule from a federal agency, effectively nullifying it. However, it is subject to a presidential veto, which requires a two-thirds vote in both the House and the Senate to be overturned.

The final rule, which goes into effect December 26, 2023, upends existing employment policy and increases liability risks. It will have far-reaching consequences for our industry, including higher costs and business uncertainty for operators. Several business groups have already started legal action against the NLRB and the rule as well. Watch for future updates and opportunities to take action.

Thank you all who participated in the final coffee meeting of 2023 in Cedar Falls. It was a great gathering and the IHLA team appreciated the opportunity to connect with so many of you. For those of you that could not attend please refer to our weekly emails and attend when possible. 

Also, please check out our website for information on what the Association is doing on your behalf, as there are many state legislative issues that the IHLA is working on exclusively for Iowa's hotel and lodging industry. Three efforts to increase hotel/motel taxes are being proposed by groups across the state today. We continue to oppose those efforts and promote our bill to eliminate the sales tax you pay on items to prepare a customer room.   

It’s important that we all get involved and participate, as it’s your business, your industry that’s at stake. Without your participation and commitment to the association we cannot be a voice for you. Have a wonderful holiday season!
