VETERANS DAY PRAYER: Holy God, who created humankind to live in community, we pause this day to give thanks for men and women who have served our nation to preserve its way of life. We give thanks to veterans who answered the call to serve in times of peace and in times of war. Grant peace of mind to veterans who encountered the horrors of war and allow them to move forward with their lives. May all veterans experience the gratitude of the citizens whose lives are enriched because of the freedoms preserved by these brave men and women. Grant them your peace. Amen.

Did you miss a sermon or can't remember the good statement made by Pastor Jason recently?
|
|
We have the compendium of the world's knowledge just a few fingertips and network connections away. Instantly, anything and everything that can be known is accessible to us. Often we are confronted with what to do with this information. We look to confirm our memory, expand our trivia base, or feel informed as a member of our communities.
And there is always someone who claims to know it all. And experts often are praised and ridiculed for their expertise. False information runs a little faster than factual truth, and it has the means to spread unquestioned throughout the world before any official statement or press release.
In our scripture reading this Sunday, a disciple is caught with an admirable, tourist-enthralled comment on the temple. The temple in Jerusalem was a massive and impressive complex of buildings, still under construction even in Jesus' day, rebuilt begun by Herod the Great and completed just seven years before the Jewish Revolt of 70 AD. The Romans removed the entire complex, leaving only the base. You can still see the stones cast down into the Tyroppean Valley today. In the eyes of the Jewish people, the Temple was like the US Treasury, Capitol, White House, and National Cathedral all in one. No wonder Jesus' condemnation was brought up in the midst of his trial as a declaration of national treason!
Leaving the temple, the inner circle of disciples (Peter, James, John) and Andrew, ask google... well Jesus, for more information about signs and times. Sitting across from the temple on the Mount of Olives, Jesus warns of many claiming to be or to do things on his behalf, and both natural and political upheaval and distress.
The world is already (and dare we say, has always been) full of wars and rumors of wars, natural disasters, and famines. But as followers of Jesus, people of God in the world, we have seen enough to know that another reality defines our lives and defines our world. We have enough evidence of the goodness of God all around us to insist that the brokenness we see is not the final story.
We will never know the full story (even Jesus says only God knows), and we do not need the details. Unfortunately there are charlatans of every form including those who claim to follow Jesus. Be skeptical of anyone who claims to have inside information. We have enough to know for now.

The Cost of Discipleship
Book Study Group Continues Sunday, 10:30 AM
|
We continue to review and discuss chapters 2-5 (they are short chapters). What does it mean to be called into discipleship? It means leaving a life of relative security into a life of absolute insecurity (but a relationship with Jesus). It will require single-minded obedience, connecting oneself closely with the suffering and rejection Jesus himself experiences. Discipleship is a complete attachment to Christ's person.

Give Regularly through five acts of generosity each month
|
|
From the very beginning of the movement, Disciples have founded institutions of higher learning, encouraging students in their intellectual pursuits. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is still committed to higher education.
On November 14 and 21, Disciples churches across the US and Canada will collect the Thanksgiving offering. As we continue to struggle with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, our higher education institutions are facing unprecedented challenges and need our support now, more than ever. Even as they work diligently to ensure safe and healthy learning environments, the financial realities faced by many of our schools are adding additional stress to students, faculty, and staff.
This November, please give generously to this year's Thanksgiving offering. your gifts make a world of difference as Disciples continue our legacy of supporting education and our institutions of higher learning.
