Twenty-Fourth Sunday After Pentecost

100 years of Allen House.

65 years of Chapel:

Brokenness into Beauty

Maria Allen left Cheyenne House to five of her children. Wharton, an avid golfer and the most colorful of all the Allen children, was the only one of her children who continued to live with her at Cheyenne House in adulthood.  As co-executors of his mother’s trust, Wharton and with his younger brother, George decided to put up the land and home for sale.

Howard Creel, a good friend of Wharton and Junior Warden at Grace/St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, became interested in the property for use as a church. Howard was once a caddy at Broadmoor Golf Club and his amateur and professional play led to his election into the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame. He was known as the “king of the nation’s left-handed golfers.” Howard’s wife, Mary, was a wealthy oil woman from Houston who also played golf.

Howard spent considerable time with Wharton both on the golf course and Colorado Springs best drinking and dining establishments. Howard Creel negotiated the deal where the Allen heirs would sell Cheyenne House to Grace & St. Stephen’s church for only $75,000. The significantly below-market transaction would secure a tax exemption for the estate.

Wharton served as an ambulance driver and artillery man in France during WWI. He was a short, barrel-chested, crew cut, Pennsylvania style aristocrat. He dressed and looked like a rodeo performer. He was impulsive and liked to show off. He could be quite entertaining. He once took a widow of a Pacific war hero to the men’s exclusive El Paso Club Men’s Grill. To cause even further ruckus, he tipped the waiter (also a taboo causing an uproar and a stink). Wharton died, November 21, 1963 at the age of 68 and is buried next to his mother.

Howard Creel was inducted in 1979 into the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame. The Creel Foundation, created upon Mary Creel’s death, has continued to support Chapel of Our Saviour with grants. (Our Community Café is one of the programs funded by the Creel Foundation.) Much more to come on Howard Creel and the Creel Foundation.

While playing in a golf tournament at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, the dashing Howard Creel met the lovely Mary Katherine Sterling. (Any relation, Jack?) He won the golf tournament and also won Mary Katherine Sterling’s heart.
