I shared with the parishioners when I was assigned to St. Mary’s that this was my third parish serving as pastor. Each of the parishes I have served as an associate and as a pastor have had a parish school. Each of the three parishes I have served as pastor has all been recipients of the National Blue Ribbon Award. The recognition and acknowledgement of the school by the Department of Education is a wonderful tribute to the School of St. Mary for a third time in the past thirty years.
The Blue Ribbon Award is presented by the Department of Education. It is a great honor and a tribute to our school administration and faculty. It is a moment of pride for our students and families. It is a great accomplishment and achievement for our parish and school community. We will be having a series of celebrations in the coming week. In addition to the Awards Ceremony this week there will be a school assembly the following week as the Blue Ribbon Crusader Community of the School of St. Mary celebrates this Blue Ribbon award.

Pack the Pantry will take place next weekend, please note that there are new protocols for this months’ Pack the Pantry. All items are to be dropped off at the UGC Gym doors near the Green Bay Road parking lot. Thanks to the Eggers family for assisting in feeding the hungry at our sharing parish Most Blessed Trinity Parish in Waukegan. Thanks for helping with this effort on November 21st and 22nd. If you are more comfortable making a donation rather than dropping off household items and food, please make the check out to St. Mary’s including in the memo section MBT Food Pantry. You have heard me share how much I always look forward to my annual retreat. The time in prayer with the Lord is always treasured and precious time for me. I have grown greatly with the help of the spiritual directors that have generously walked with me while on retreat. The spiritual director offers me suggestions of which Scripture passage I can reflect on during retreat. Sharing with them the movement of God in prayer, they offer and suggest additional forms of prayer that enhance my time with the Lord on the annual retreat.
I was scheduled to be out in Boston this coming week at the Eastern Point Retreat House, my spiritual home. I had cleared my calendar, purchased the plane ticket, arranged for a rental car – I was set to go, in every way except packing my Bible and a few things necessary for the week in prayer. Last week I decided that with all of the issues in our country with the COVID-19, this week was not the time to get on a plane, go to a retreat house with 40 – 50 other people for a week of prayer. The recent guidelines of the Archdiocese for priests as well as lay employees suggest deferring any travel that is not essential. It would be fairly easy for me to argue a week in prayer is essential to my priesthood, while at the same time realizing there are other realities that are taking precedent these days, of more importance what I personally would like to do.
Adjusting our lives, adjusting our routines, adjusting our travel is not that difficult. I hear and learn of sacrifices people are making, first responders, medical professionals, and many other careers. I am going to be staying in the area, taking a few days for prayer and reflection. I will be keeping you and your loved ones in my prayers, our parish, our community, our society, our nation and our world.
These following pictures are moments of past retreats and times in prayer reminding me of the hope and promise of God, the gift of a new day breaking over the horizon and the beauty and majesty of God in creation, of the shoreline of the retreat house in Gloucester, MA that I have been praying at the past 30 years. I look forward to returning there for my annual retreat in the fall of 2021.

At our Parish Council meeting this past week we were discussing the way we pray together and hope to pray together this Christmas season. The Parish Council discussed the survey and many issues parishioners and families are dealing with on a daily basis. For some, the specifics and details of what Christmas will look like; including worshipping at St. Mary’s or not, is too far in the future to know for sure. However, if you are aware of your plans or of your hopes for Christmas please take a moment or two to complete the survey for the Parish Liturgy Committee and Parish Staff to use in properly planning for our Masses and liturgical celebrations of the birth of our Lord and Savior.
Later this month registered parishioners will be receiving a mailed copy of the Parish Annual Report. A digital copy is available on our parish website. The report is a response to the generosity of the parishioners of our parish. During these COVID days our collections have been trending under budget. May parishioners take a look at their level of support and continue their support to the parish in the offertory collection, on line, by check to the parish office, as well as in the offertory basket at the back of church.

November is dedicated as the month of All Souls. St. Mary’s has the custom of giving a place of honor to a book in which to write the names of their beloved dead. You are invited all through November to write in the names of your loved ones who have died in the Book of the Names of the Dead. This book will be located in the front of church near the Baptismal font. It is left open for people to write the names of their deceased loved ones and for others to read the names, remember, and pray for the repose of their souls. This practice provides us with an opportunity for healing and consolation in the face of grief. Remembering all of these men and women who have gone before us, “marked with the sign of faith,” helps us better understand and appreciate our faith in the Christ our risen Lord who conquers sin and death and brings new life to all.

GENERAL GUIDELINES
Below are a few guidelines for being in the Church. There are numerous signs around the exterior and interior of the Church to help facilitate these new patterns. Due to the limited capacity, number of parishioners and our reduced Mass schedule, we ask that you sign up for a weekend Mass every other week and one weekday Mass to allow others to be able to pray in the Church and celebrate Mass in person. If the day before, there are still open slots, you may sign up.

Church Entrance: The south door, near the elevator, is the only entrance into the Church. Please form a line along the exterior south wall of the Church and a volunteer greeter will let you in.

Arrive On Time: South Entrance doors will open 15 minutes prior to the start of Mass and it is strongly encouraged you arrive by the time the doors open as time is needed to Greet visitors and allow Ushers to seat you.

Entrance Doors Close: South Entrance doors will close at the start of Mass to allow volunteers to attend Mass. Thank you for allowing yourself time to arrive.

Volunteers: Parish volunteers will be on site to help direct and guide all of us as we begin to open and re-enter the Church.

Masks/Face Covering: Mask or face coverings are required to be worn by all individuals at all times while in the Church building.

Hand Sanitizer: Sanitize your hands as you enter the Church building.

Social Distance: Maintain proper social distancing of 6 feet apart, unless you are with somebody who lives in the same household as you. There are floor markings to help facilitate this.

100 Persons Maximum: A maximum of 100 individuals (excluding the priest and other ministers) are allowed in the Church at one time. In inclement weather, personal vehicles would be a necessary shelter while waiting.

Church Exit: The north doors onto the main plaza will be the only exit from the Church (unless you require use of the elevator).

Church East Entrance - Emergency Exit Only: Please do not use the East doors onto the stairways for either entering or exiting.

Surface Sanitizing: All surfaces touched by persons are sanitized prior to the next opening of the Church.

Restrooms Unavailable: For the safety of all, the restrooms will not be available, unless it's an emergency.

Registration Required: Registration is required through SignUp Genius for Public Mass, Adoration, Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. 85 slots will be available online and 15 slots will be available by calling the office for those who do not have access to technology.

SignUp Availability: SignUps for the next week's schedule will be available through SignUp Genius after 9:00am on Friday's. Registration is required for Public Mass & Prayer, Adoration, Weddings, Funerals and Baptisms. If you need assistance, please contact the Parish Center Office during normal business hours at receptionist@churchofstmary.org or call 847-234-0205. Leave a message and they will call you back.
VOLUNTEERS
Volunteer Tasks:
- Greeters will assist in managing the flow of congregants as they enter the church, participate in the liturgy/sacrament, and exit the church.
- Team members will combine some of the functions of an usher, such as directing participants to appropriate seating/waiting areas, but will include additional responsibilities, including, but not limited to, making sure attendees use hand sanitizer upon entering, are wearing a mask, and are reminded not to enter if ill.
- Given the circumstances, greeters will need to be tactful and firm paying careful attention to all people on-site. To support parish greeter teams, rudimentary training tips on handling difficult situations will be provided.
- Volunteers will ensure that: all supplies needed for each sacramental celebration/gathering are ready for use, entrances and exits are marked and propped physically open prior to attendees' arrival/departure, and windows are opened.
- Volunteers will help maintain and sanitize essential and trafficked areas of the church after the church has been used. Masks and gloves will be provided, if necessary, in addition to approved cleaning/disinfecting supplies.

November 15, 2020: Gospel Reflection for the Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time |
|
It’s hard to believe that Advent is right around the corner. Advent marks a new liturgical or church year. One way to recognize that we are getting closer to the beginning of a new year is to notice that the readings get more dire and apocalyptic towards the end of the liturgical year. The past several Sundays our readings have been themed around looking at our lives and seeing if we are prepared to make a reckoning when we pass away. Since we do not know when that will be we need to always live our life as if each day could be our last. This Sunday’s gospel picks up right where we left off with Matthew. Last week we saw what happened when the five bridesmaids did not produce good works in their lives to generate the oil needed to light their lamps in search of God. This Sunday we will hear a similar parable.
In our first reading, Proverbs tells us how to be a good spouse to God. When this was written it described how Israel was to be in relationship with God, but it is true for us as well. Those in right relationship with God are treasured by God, even more so than any jewel. They do good works, are hardworking and they take care of the marginalized. When we read that the spouse who fears the Lord is to be praised, we must remember that the word “fear” meant “wonder and awe”, not to be scared of God. God is bigger than any of us could ever possibly imagine which is an exciting mystery to live in!
The Parable of the Talents is not one of banking or fiduciary compliance; it is about sharing the gifts that God has given each of us instead of fearing the risk of losing those talents if we share them. The servants in the parable become the Master’s representatives once he is away. In the same way, we are God’s representatives here on earth. People should know we are people of God simply by our actions, how we treat others.
God gives all of us unique talents. We are to nurture those gifts and share them with everyone else, we give them away. By sharing our unique giftedness we are increasing the amount the Holy Spirit may work in us. That may sound counter indicative but think about when you volunteer in different ministries, most people come away with feeling that they got so much more out of it than they gave. Their spirit has increased. The first two servants understood this; the last servant did not. The last servant’s image of God was one of wrath and demanding. He were afraid to lose what little he had out of fear of punishment, so he decided to bury his giftedness versus cultivating it. He didn’t realize that what is freely given to us is meant to be given freely to others. That is the nature of Spirit. Are there fears or other barriers that hold you back from sharing yourself with others? In what ways could you see those barriers coming down so that you feel safe in sharing who you are?

Founded in 1969, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) is the national, anti-poverty, social justice program of the U.S. Catholic Bishops. The bishops have given CCHD the mission to address the root causes of poverty in the United States through promotion and support of community-controlled, self-help organizations. CCHD has the complementary mission of educating on poverty and its causes in our country. CCHD is a work of faith and transformation, and a sign of the Gospel at work. In low-income communities across the United States, CCHD puts into practice Catholic teaching on the life and dignity of every human person and the Gospel’s command to care for “the least of these” (Matthew 25). MARY: WOMAN OF GREAT COURAGE AND CHARACTER
Mary, the mother of Jesus, commonly referred to as Mary, Mother of God, Saint Mary, Virgin Mary and Blessed Virgin Mary, is one of the most admired figures in Scripture and considered by many to be the greatest of all Christian saints. She was a willing servant who trusted God and obeyed His call. While her life held great honor, her calling also required great suffering. Though there was joy in motherhood, there was great pain in the privilege of being the mother of the Messiah. Despite these things, she responded to God with great obedience and submission to His plan. Her life never robbed Jesus of His glory, for her mission was to witness the glory of the Son of God. She was a person of discipleship and faith, and the first true follower of Jesus.

Caitlyn is a doctoral student in theology at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, IL. She holds a master’s in bioethics from the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND and an S.T.L. (Licentiate of Sacred Theology) from the University of Saint Mary of the Lake. She is passionate about studying the interplay between theology and medicine and has a great zeal to teach others about the Faith. Mundelein seminarians will also join and present for part of the zoom sessions.

The second lecture in a five-part program, Rosa Mystica: A Journey of Renewal & Restoration, will be held on December 8 at 6:30pm. The lecture, Mary: Hearer of the Word, will feature two Marian paintings and a video on the art restoration of one of the paintings. The first painting is The Immaculate Conception and Angels (1560-1563) by Francesco De'Rossi (Salviati). The second painting, The Annunciation, was recently discovered on Archdiocesan grounds and may be of at least 16th century Italian origin. Both paintings will illumine the Advent/Christmas season. The Soup Kitchen is in need of clean plastic grocery-type bags to use in distributing our take-out meals. We use an estimated 900-1000 per week, and purchasing them uses funds which could be better spent on food stuffs. We would appreciate anyone who can save their plastic bags and donate them for reuse. God expects us to nurture and develop the gifts He has given us and then generously return a portion with in-crease. He doesn’t want us to waste or hoard the gifts He has given us; He expects us to grow our gifts, use them wisely and be generous with them. Unfortunately, many of us are not generous in proportion to all that God has given us.
