KEEP IT SMALL, KEEP IT LOCAL, SHOP THE ROCK!

Truth is, every business on Orcas is a small business. And here's a fun fact for you: 68 cents out of every dollar spent locally STAYS local. By shopping the rock, you are literally building community.

Next Saturday businesses across the island will be participating in Small Business Saturday with special sales, discounts, pop-up events, and more. Get your holiday shopping started by supporting these island neighbors and sign up for your chance to win a $1,000 gift card to Island Market. That's not a misprint! Raffle tickets will be available at participating businesses and the drawing will be held at the Holiday on the Green during our tree lighting event Friday, December 1.

LIONS CLUB TO RAISE MONEY FOR ORCAS FIRE AND RESCUE

The Orcas Island Lions Club has announced a fundraiser to purchase much needed medical equipment for Orcas Island Fire & Rescue. The Fire Department is in need of equipment upgrades for their video larynogoscopes which are currently 12 years old. Video laryngoscopes are a vital piece of equipment that our fire department paramedics use to place breathing tubes for patients who are unable to breath adequately on their own.

The fire department is currently using 12 year old scopes which are at the end of their serviceable life. Funds raised in this effort will be used to replace the current scopes and place the new OneScopes in service immediately. The new OneScope is small enough to be carried in the paramedic’s kits and has a larger screen with a higher resolution, improving the airway view for the paramedic placing the breathing tube.

The total cost for the OneScope purchase is approximately $8,000 with additional funds needed to purchase the disposable parts that are needed for each of the scopes use in the field and in training. Through the month of December, the Lions Club will match up to $5,000 in community donations for the purchase of this much needed equipment to benefit all residents of Orcas Island.

Donations should go to: Orcas Island Lions Foundation, PO Box 1212 Eastsound, WA 98245

The Orcas Island Club Foundation is a 501(C3) organization which makes any donation tax deductible. OILF EIN: 31-1730975

Rekindling Adventure: Climbing Adventures with Orcas Senior Center

“I feel alive again” were the first words said by Karen as she left Climb San Juan, a climbing gym in Friday Harbor. Four climbers, including two first time climbers, enjoyed this Sunday outing sponsored by the Orcas Senior Center. With instruction from the gym’s owner, the climbers quickly acquired skills that allowed them to overcome any fear or trepidation they may have had; all successfully reached the top of at least one climbing route. All four vowed to go again. If you are interested in taking part in another climbing field trip, please contact Edy Hansen at (206) 413-6167 or [email protected] and let her know what days of the week work best for you. Once at least four people express interest, she will organize another outing. Anyone aged 18 or older is welcome to sign up.
