Young Filmmakers Academy

This fall, were we very excited to bring the  Young Filmmakers Academy 2017: "Creating Peace" to Peabody and offer a new after school filmmaking program for students in grades 4-8. The program began in late August and culminated with a red carpet premiere at the Virginia Film Festival November 11.

Designed to engage youth in authentic film production, Young Filmmakers Academy (YFA) is a collaboration between the Virginia Film Festival and Light House Studio that introduces students to the challenges of filmmaking. Students work in teams to write, produce, and edit short films around a common structure. After the writing, directing, filming, and editing are complete, the YFA honors the Young Filmmakers with a red carpet premiere of the films.

Our students created two 2-minute films for the competition.  Dark Room explores the interconnectedness of individuals working to create peace and overcome challenges. At heart, it shows that when we hurt one another we, in fact, hurt ourselves.   Creating Peace: A Charlottesville Documentary features a wide range of voices and perspectives in the local community and affirms personal contributions toward the common goal of achieving peace.

We are so proud of of filmmakers and hope you enjoy our films! Please view them at the link below!

Children's Author Visit

Award-winning children's book author Kentrell Martin will be visiting Peabody School on 11/28 and reading to the PK-3 classes. He is the author of Shelley Goes to the Zoo (picture book), Shelly's Outdoor Adventure (picture book), Kasey's First Day of Basketball Practice (chapter book), and Shelly Goes to the Bank (chapter book). Each of these titles incorporates American Sign Language (ASL) while telling a fun-filled story. During his educational presentation, he will read one of his books and teach the students 10-20 signs in American Sign Language.

Pre-order forms will be sent home with students this week. If you are interested in purchasing any of the titles, please return forms no later than 11/28. Mr. Martin will autograph books following his reading.

School Photos Arrive Monday!

The school portrait prints are in and ready to be delivered to school on Monday. Check your child's backpack after school on Monday. If you prefer to pick up the prints themselves (from fear of the pics getting bent in backpacks) you can email Susan and she'll leave the prints in the office to be picked up.

Peabody Students win 1st Place at Debate Competition!

Kat Ravichandran and Venetia Smith
teamed up to earn first place at the Charlottesville Debate league tournament last Saturday.

They won each of their five rounds, arguing both for and against the resolution that the United States government should institute universal background checks for all gun purchases.

In the final round they argued the con side and beat a talented team from Tandem. Kat and Venetia were amazing, both well-prepared and cool under pressure. They expertly applied the lessons of our great UVA student-instructors, Katie and Akhil.

Kate Burns and Evelyn Lepsch also competed and represented Peabody well. It was a great day for Peabody's new Debate Club!
World Peace Game

Our fifth grade students will be participating in the World Peace Game this spring and we are in need of your help!

As we prepare to offer this to our students, we need your help to build the board. Please see the sign-up genius for pieces needed for us to play the game and if you are willing donate anything, please drop it off in the main office. Used pieces are more than acceptable. Thanks!

This week in Middle School..

8A students began to explore "Makey Makeys" this week and quickly created Banana Pianos as a starter project. "Makey Makeys" allow anything conductive to become a keyboard key (including soda can tabs, tin foil, and bananas!), and student will spend the weeks leading up to the winter break inventing their own "Makey Makey" projects.

Social Studies Presentation

Fifth graders have been learning about Southwest Asia’s geography and history.  On Thursday they were treated with a visit from Mr. Babak Alimard, a Peabody parent who was born in Iran. He shared the extraordinary story of his family’s escape, after the Iranian Revolution in 1979, when he was a young boy. Students learned about the history of Iran and how it grew into its time of turmoil. They were astonished at the dangers Mr. Alimard’s family encountered in order to escape. Many thanks to Mr. Alimard for giving his time to share his remarkable story.
