Good Afternoon St. Stephen Families,
As we prepare for Thanksgiving, I want to say how thankful I am to work in this community. I appreciate how we all work together to support the students. Today, I enjoyed seeing the parents helping our youngest students share a Thanksgiving meal with their friends. I also enjoyed hearing our final total for the Making Waves event, just over $18,000! The class winners of the pizza party are 1st and 8th Grade. Congratulations and thank you, everyone, for the donations.
Here are some reminders about morning and afternoon carline. Morning carline ends promptly at 7:48 am. This allows students 2 minutes to get to class before the bell rings. If you arrive after 7:48 am, please walk your child into the office. For afternoon carline, the times are 3:00 to 3:20 pm. It is important that you arrive by 3:20 at the latest. If there are no more cars waiting to be checked in at 3:20, the person checking in cars will leave and you will need to go to Extended Day to pick up your child. There are times that carline goes later than 3:20 and we do stay there until all cars are checked in, but we never know what the end time will be. Teachers can also see out their windows when the line is ending. Once all cars are announced, they send the remaining students to Extended Day. Therefore, please be sure to always arrive by 3:20 pm.
I would like to share some information I received from teachers over the past few weeks. Now that grades 5-8 are back in the FLC eating lunch, teachers are able to see how large groups of students are managing their food. Student lunches should include protein, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, but it's also important to choose foods they will like. We watch students attempt to throw away whole apples, bananas, and other items because they don't like or want them. They also don't want to bring them back home. Please talk to your child about the healthy foods they do like to eat and have them help pack their lunches. If they play a role in choosing the food, they will more likely eat it. The other thing I am hearing from middle school teachers is that students are falling asleep in class. It doesn't seem to be one teacher or subject but across all classes. I suggest you look at your child's schedule and help them plan time for homework, outside activities, family time, etc., and still get enough sleep. Middle school students are going through many physical changes and sometimes need more sleep than younger students.
When we return from Thanksgiving break, families will receive a google form for ice cream sign up for the remainder of the year. You will notice on the form that there is an increase in the price of ice cream from $1.00 to $1.50 per week. I just met with a representative from a different vendor today and we will be switching after Christmas. We have been disappointed in the quality and unavailability of the ice cream with our current vendor. With our new vendor, we are able to supply Good Humor and Popsicle brand ice cream as well as other brand name items. However, with an upgrade in quality comes an increase in price. I believe that the increase of 50 cents per week will be well worth the ice cream we will now be providing.

Finally, I wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving!
Peace,
Linda Umoh

New this year, parents will have the option to pay for their child(ren)’s shopping through FACTS. A budget form will be sent home the week before the shop opens, so parents may help students decide whom to purchase gifts for and how much to spend.
