Abstracts

Brains, Heart, and Courage: Your Toolbox for Counseling Families
The vast majority of parents of children with hearing loss have no prior experience with deafness.  How can professionals help them adjust to their new role as "captain of the team" for their deaf or hard of hearing child?  Go beyond the typical "stages of grief" to explore what the research has to say about emotional adjustment in parents and children with hearing loss (brains), learn key techniques for counseling families (heart), and explore case studies for how to have these crucial conversations (courage).

Their Words, Their World
Move beyond "cultural competence" to "cultural humility" and learn how to optimize outcomes for all the families on your caseload, regardless of cultural, ethnic, or linguistic background.  This presentation will explore ways in which professionals can honor and enhance existing patterns of communication in families and encourage family partnership in therapy.  Participants will examine their own linguistic socialization and the ways in which this does or does not match the families they serve, learn how to distinguish language differences from language disorders, and develop techniques to adapt therapy to reflect unique family situations.

Building Speech Skills Through Listening
Forget the flashcards, ditch the drills.  You can help children with hearing loss develop beautiful, natural speech skills through listening and play!  This presentation will cover the essentials behind the theory of speech acoustics and how parents and professionals can use this information to maximize  listening skills to develop  speech.  Best of all, there are no flashcards involved!  You'll learn fun, easy activities that you can use at home or in therapy to help children learn to speak clearly.

No Toys?  No Problem!
Leave the toy bag behind and learn how to craft engaging auditory verbal sessions using just what families have on hand.  Explore the power of routines-based intervention -- learn how to conduct a motivational interview to determine family routines, integrate intervention goals into daily activities, and adapt your practice to meet the needs of families and children at all levels.
