Reopening for the Celebration of Public Mass & Schedule

From the Desk of Fr. Mike Nacius, Pastor
“St. Mary’s gives thanks for ALL God’s blessings” is the message on the signs people see when traveling down Illinois or Green Bay roads. May all, the young and the old parishioners of St. Mary’s give thanks for the many blessings that we have in our lives. May we become a blessing to each other this Thanksgiving.

We are days away from the beautiful celebration of Thanksgiving. We are now days away from a celebration of Thanksgiving unlike any other in our lives. We may or may not have the same food as we traditionally have and enjoy. We may be using social media in ways we never have so we can “gather” with loved ones, sharing part of our day together, even if we are not sharing the same table or platter of food with those we carry in our heart and prayer. Whatever our celebrations look like, no matter how many people or how few we share the day, may prayer and gratitude be part of our ritual and celebration in giving thanks to God.

Thanksgiving is more than a day, it is a belief, it is a conviction, and it is a lived attitude shared with others. May thanksgiving and thanks-living be always part of our lives no matter what “Thanksgiving 2020” is in our lives at this moment of time?

Mark your calendars, register at Signup Genius for the Mass we will be having a 9:00 AM at St. Mary’s. You are invited to attend and or stream into the church and from the church to your homes this Thursday. If you can, send me a short email of what you are thanking God for in this season. “For what do you thank God for during this unique time?” I look forward to hearing from you at mnacius@churchofstmary.org

Thanks to the parishioners that are helping feed the hungry at our sharing parish, Most Blessed Trinity by contributing to the Pack the Pantry Food Drive this weekend. All food items and donations are to be dropped off at the UGC Gym doors near the Green Bay Road parking lot. Please bring your donations no later than 1:00 PM on Sunday, November 22nd so they can be brought to our sharing parish that afternoon.

In addition to the Soup Pantry at our sharing parish I want to inform you of a Food Pantry in Lake Forest, sponsored and hosted by the Church of the Holy Spirit. I was in touch with Fr. Luke Back, pastor who shared with me that their Food Pantry is going into overdrive. “We have some passionate and dedicated leadership and volunteers who are feeding more and more people all the time. We may even have a volunteer or two from St. Mary’s. The Church of the Holy Spirit Food Pantry serves people in Lake Bluff / Lake Forest struggling with food insufficiency at this time in their life. The Church of the Holy Spirit has a 24/7 anonymous hotline where people can call to receive food. A parish volunteer, Mr.  John Harper would make a delivery, with a couple of bags of food. It would be noted that it is anonymous. The hotline telephone number is 847-235-1107 and there is more information on their parish website www.chslf.org.

May all who hunger for food be supported by our parish and local community of faith.

The parish is very grateful for the ongoing support to the mission and ministries of St. Mary’s Church. In these economic times, the support of all will assist us in serving the faith community and our parishioners. We have noticed a decline in our offertory collection with the attendance of fewer people due to the COVID protocols by the Archdiocese of Chicago. Please consider supporting the ministry and mission of St. Mary’s with a regular contribution or year end gift to the parish.

Gifts of appreciated securities can be designated for 100% deposit to our parish accounts.
If you are able please consider this option for your year-end giving as we face pressures from decreased offertory collections during the COVID shutdown. Please contact the Business Office and Rebecca Quackenbush at (847) 582-2502 or rquackenbush@churchofstmary.org

God bless you with a thankful and generous heart.

The Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2020 is available here.
Month of All Souls 2020
November is dedicated as the month of All Souls. St. Mary’s has the custom of giving a place of honor to a book in which to write the names of their beloved dead. You are invited all through November to write in the names of your loved ones who have died in the Book of the Names of the Dead. This book will be located in the front of church near the Baptismal font. It is left open for people to write the names of their deceased loved ones and for others to read the names, remember, and pray for the repose of their souls. This practice provides us with an opportunity for healing and consolation in the face of grief. Remembering all of these men and women who have gone before us, “marked with the sign of faith,” helps us better understand and appreciate our faith in the Christ our risen Lord who conquers sin and death and brings new life to all.

For everyone’s safety please plan on using your own pen. We are available to write your loved one’s names for you. Email any one of us with your names of the deceased and we will write them in this book for you. mnacius@churchofstmary.org, ralcantara@churchofstmary.org, lnugent@churchofstmary.org

GENERAL GUIDELINES
Below are a few guidelines for being in the Church. There are numerous signs around the exterior and interior of the Church to help facilitate these new patterns. Due to the limited capacity, number of parishioners and our reduced Mass schedule, we ask that you sign up for a weekend Mass every other week and one weekday Mass to allow others to be able to pray in the Church and celebrate Mass in person. If the day before, there are still open slots, you may sign up.

  • Church Entrance:  The south door, near the elevator, is the only entrance into the Church. Please form a line along the exterior south wall of the Church and a volunteer greeter will let you in.
  • Arrive On Time:  South Entrance doors will open 15 minutes prior to the start of Mass and it is strongly encouraged you arrive by the time the doors open as time is needed to Greet visitors and allow Ushers to seat you.
  • Entrance Doors Close:  South Entrance doors will close at the start of Mass to allow volunteers to attend Mass. Thank you for allowing yourself time to arrive.
  • Volunteers:  Parish volunteers will be on site to help direct and guide all of us as we begin to open and re-enter the Church.
  • Masks/Face Covering:  Mask or face coverings are required to be worn by all individuals at all times while in the Church building.
  • Hand Sanitizer:  Sanitize your hands as you enter the Church building.
  • Social Distance:  Maintain proper social distancing of 6 feet apart, unless you are with somebody who lives in the same household as you. There are floor markings to help facilitate this.
  • 100 Persons Maximum:  A maximum of 100 individuals (excluding the priest and other ministers) are allowed in the Church at one time. In inclement weather, personal vehicles would be a necessary shelter while waiting.
  • Church Exit:  The north doors onto the main plaza will be the only exit from the Church (unless you require use of the elevator).
  • Church East Entrance - Emergency Exit Only:  Please do not use the East doors onto the stairways for either entering or exiting.
  • Surface Sanitizing: All surfaces touched by persons are sanitized prior to the next opening of the Church.
  • Restrooms Unavailable:  For the safety of all, the restrooms will not be available, unless it's an emergency.
  • Registration Required:  Registration is required through SignUp Genius for Public Mass, Adoration, Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. 85 slots will be available online and 15 slots will be available by calling the office for those who do not have access to technology.
  • SignUp Availability: SignUps for the next week's schedule will be available through SignUp Genius after 9:00am on Friday's. Registration is required for Public Mass & Prayer, Adoration, Weddings, Funerals and Baptisms. If you need assistance, please contact the Parish Center Office during normal business hours at receptionist@churchofstmary.org or call 847-234-0205. Leave a message and they will call you back.

VOLUNTEERS
We are requesting volunteers to assist and volunteer guidelines will be sent to all volunteers when they SignUp for a Church of St. Mary Volunteer SignUP shift:

Volunteer Tasks:
  • Greeters will assist in managing the flow of congregants as they enter the church, participate in the liturgy/sacrament, and exit the church.
  • Team members will combine some of the functions of an usher, such as directing participants to appropriate seating/waiting areas, but will include additional responsibilities, including, but not limited to, making sure attendees use hand sanitizer upon entering, are wearing a mask, and are reminded not to enter if ill.
  • Given the circumstances, greeters will need to be tactful and firm paying careful attention to all people on-site. To support parish greeter teams, rudimentary training tips on handling difficult situations will be provided.
  • Volunteers will ensure that: all supplies needed for each sacramental celebration/gathering are ready for use, entrances and exits are marked and propped physically open prior to attendees' arrival/departure, and windows are opened.
  • Volunteers will help maintain and sanitize essential and trafficked areas of the church after the church has been used. Masks and gloves will be provided, if necessary, in addition to approved cleaning/disinfecting supplies.

May God grant you peace and comfort in this time.
November 22, 2020: Gospel Reflection for The Feast of Christ the King
Sunday is the Feast of Christ the King and the end of our liturgical year. Sunday, November 29 is the first Sunday in Advent, the start of a new liturgical year. The readings for this Sunday are a final stark warning for us to look at how we live our lives and to reflect upon if our ways of living are in line with God’s ways. Towards the end of our church year we always have readings about the end of time. It is a way to help us reflect on our lives each year to see where we may improve.  In our first reading, God speaks through Ezekiel to let the people know that God will now take over tending his sheep since those who were in charge of shepherding the people in the ways of how God wants them to live have abandoned them, and allowed them to be lead astray. Those unfit shepherds (the goats) were only concerned with taking care of themselves not others. So God will bring back the sheep, those that were scattered (a reference to those of the Southern Kingdom of Judah who were overtaken by the Babylonians and forced to live in Babylon), those who need spiritual healing, those who have strayed and God will mend them and bring them back to covenantal living. And as for the goats, God will destroy them.

This speaks to how a person lives their lives. Those that live only for themselves need to change their ways if they want eternal life with God. That includes those who are willing to help other people, but only certain people, people who will now owe them something in return.

In the gospel Jesus gives us an even clearer picture of what is expected. As is the norm, Jesus always expands upon what we think we know, to help gain a deeper understanding of how best to live out God’s will.

Jesus starts out telling his disciples that at the end of days all the nations will be sorted. Those on the right, the sheep, will have eternal life close to God whereas those on the left, the goats, will far from God. Now, I have to admit my own bias here because one of my older brothers grew up raising goats. And let me tell you, they are adorable! They will east any & everything, but are also very loving creatures. So we shouldn’t read into the fact that goats are the ones on the left side of God.

God will say to those on the right side that “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.’” They are confused because they don’t recall seeing Jesus and ministering to him in these ways. Ahh, here it comes! Jesus tells them that by ministering to anyone, especially the least in society, they were ministering to Jesus. When we care for those people at the edges of society, the ones most of us ignore or don’t even realize exist, we minister to Jesus. This isn’t about grand gestures; this is about seeing the divine in everyone & everything that God created. And God created everything!

Jesus was talking about what we now call the Corporal Works of Mercy. Ways we can physically go out into the world and help others. How many times in the past week or so, have you been able to partake in these Corporal Works of Mercy? What about this coming week and Thanksgiving, what can you and your family do to help others?

God will then turn to those on his left and let them know that since they did not to any of these deeds they will not be allowed to be close to God in the afterlife. This group is equally confused for had they known Jesus was near; they of course would have ministered to him! Of course they would have done it for the wrong reasons. They would have done the right thing but only to be seen doing it. They are concerned only with the externals, what people can see. This way they look good, even if their intentions are self-serving. God sees into our hearts and souls and knows what lies there. We are to do good because others are in need and we can help. Period. We don’t help others because now those people will owe us and therefore we are only doing it for our own personal gain. That is where this group went astray. We are to live other-centered not self-centered. At the heart of what God wants of us is to see God in everyone & everything and treat everyone & everything as the beloved of God that they are!
Catholic Campaign for Human Development
Founded in 1969, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) is the national, anti-poverty, social justice program of the U.S. Catholic Bishops. The bishops have given CCHD the mission to address the root causes of poverty in the United States through promotion and support of community-controlled, self-help organizations. CCHD has the complementary mission of educating on poverty and its causes in our country. CCHD is a work of faith and transformation, and a sign of the Gospel at work. In low-income communities across the United States, CCHD puts into practice Catholic teaching on the life and dignity of every human person and the Gospel’s command to care for “the least of these” (Matthew 25). It also answers the Holy Father’s call to practice solidarity as we help the poor to help themselves overcome injustice and escape poverty.

MARY: WOMAN OF GREAT COURAGE AND CHARACTER

Mary, the mother of Jesus, commonly referred to as Mary, Mother of God, Saint Mary, Virgin Mary and Blessed Virgin Mary, is one of the most admired figures in Scripture and considered by many to be the greatest of all Christian saints. She was a willing servant who trusted God and obeyed His call. While her life held great honor, her calling also required great suffering. Though there was joy in motherhood, there was great pain in the privilege of being the mother of the Messiah. Despite these things, she responded to God with great obedience and submission to His plan. Her life never robbed Jesus of His glory, for her mission was to witness the glory of the Son of God. She was a person of discipleship and faith, and the first true follower of Jesus.

PRESENTER: CAITLYN TRADER
Caitlyn is a doctoral student in theology at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, IL. She holds a master’s in bioethics from the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND and an S.T.L. (Licentiate of Sacred Theology) from the University of Saint Mary of the Lake. She is passionate about studying the interplay between theology and medicine and has a great zeal to teach others about the Faith. Mundelein seminarians will also join and present for part of the zoom sessions.

The second painting, The Annunciation, was recently discovered on Archdiocesan grounds and may be of at least 16th century Italian origin. Both paintings will illumine the Advent/Christmas season. Ways to Volunteer
The Soup Kitchen is in need of clean plastic grocery-type bags to use in distributing our take-out meals. We use an estimated 900-1000 per week, and purchasing them uses funds which could be better spent on food stuffs. We would appreciate anyone who can save their plastic bags and donate them for reuse. You can call Ellen Tierney at (847) 295-4649; or e-mail ellenkelly@comcast.net for more information or special pickup arrangements. Thank you for your help.

Stewardship
“...whatever you did for one of the least of my brothers, you did for me”
                                                                          MATTHEW 25:40

Most of us are generous when it’s convenient for us. We are generous when we have the time or the money. But, generosity is the opposite of that. It means giving of one’s time, money, compassion, forgiveness, or mercy when it’s not convenient; when it’s not on our schedule, but on the other person’s schedule.
