Is your association ready for the shift in workplace learning?
by Julie Stelter,
President, Walden Group

It isn't that adults learn differently in the 21st century than in the 20th or even the 19th. Our brain functions much the same way. Rather the knowledge we have about brain science and the impact that has had on how we teach adults is at a nexus with the technology we have to facilitate that learning. Associations have a huge opportunity to capitalize on this merge. Are you prepared?

Knowledge is Power
Education is typically perceived as formal, institutionalized and hierarchical. Many associations do this training quite well. They design certification programs that require training in the form of books, study guides, workshops, webinars and maybe even eLearning courses. Continuing education credits are required to maintain the certification and there is always some sort of assessment requirement.

This is all good. We are used to this type of training. We view education as "learning to get a job." There is comfort in this educational world because knowledge is obtainable. There is an endpoint. We know when we made it.

In this form, "Knowledge is power." Knowledge comes from the instructor, the professor, or the boss and is given to the employee, the student, the underling. The top-down approach is still prevalent today yet there is a shift taking place in workplace training. Is your association ready?

Slate of WSAE Board nominees announced
by David Feldner, CAE, Nominating Committee Chair

As the Chair of the WSAE Nominating Committee, it is my pleasure to present you with the slate of Directors and officers for 2015. I'd like to thank those individuals that were interested in leading the association through the upcoming year. The willingness of so many individuals to contribute to the mission of becoming the forum where the association community thrives and grows is what makes our future so bright. Thank you to the Nominating Committee for their work in developing a slate of candidates that will continue our commitment to being the organization of choice for association innovation and leadership.

This slate will be officially elected during the business meeting on December 4, 2014, in conjunction with the Holiday Event at the Madison Marriott West. Register here to attend.

Engaging with WSAE on the volunteer level has allowed me to experience both personaI and professional growth. I encourage you to get involved in 2015. I look forward to seeing all of you at the Holiday Event!

What are your top 3 concerns?
Quick survey. Clear your mind.

The VantagePoint Editorial Committee could use your help. We want to hear what's on your mind as you prepare for 2015. What are your concerns with regard to your association's growth or initiatives? What tools are you searching for? What challenges is your Board expecting you to resolve? Member engagement? Workforce issues? Event attendance?

The things that are keeping you up at night may well lend themselves to hot topics for VantagePoint.

We've made it easy for you to tell us what's on your mind. Just fill in the blanks. And thank you for helping us create valuable content for WSAE.

Important issues ahead
American Associations Day is March 18-19

Join us for American Associations Day, the only legislative fly-in for association professionals, on March 18-19, 2015, to advocate for issues that have real implications for all of our organizations. In 2014, a record number of participants came from 36 states. This year, the issues facing the association community and our exempt purposes are even greater.

This year's sessions will feature briefs on timely issues like tax reform and nonprofit governance, as well as a primer on getting the most out of your congressional meetings. In addition, get valuable face time with colleagues from your home state, association CEOs, the ASAE Board of Directors, and other leaders in the association community. To help with our geographic representation, ASAE is offering a scholarship to those outside the DC-metro area.

American Associations Day brings together association professionals to share their stories with Congressional offices about important issues facing our community. Each day we hear more news on issues that could change the way we work for our members and manage our own associations. From changes to the tax code that could affect the tax treatment of associations' revenue-generating activities, to considerations of "political activities" that may alter how we advocate for our members, this is an important year to be present on Capitol Hill reminding our Members of Congress of the value that we bring to their states and districts.

This month's election will bring new Members of Congress to Washington who may not have a great familiarity with our community. Attend American Associations Day to tell them that your association, and all of those in your state, are driving the economy and improving society. If they have no idea why associations matter, how can they stand up for us?

WSAE taking part in industry study
in cooperation with Association Laboratory

You are invited to participate in the nation's most comprehensive association business environmental scan. Every participant in this study will be eligible to receive one of ten $50 gift cards and every participant will receive a complimentary overview of the research.

To participate in this confidential study you simply click on the following link.

The survey is comprehensive and will take you approximately 20 minutes to complete. Please note that you must complete the survey at one time or keep the survey window open when you switch to something else in the midst of responding. If you exit before finishing the survey, you will need to start over at the beginning. We cannot save partial responses and take you back to where you left off because we are not assigning unique passwords to individuals taking the survey.

WSAE is participating in this national research project in cooperation with Association Laboratory. Association Laboratory is an independent strategic research firm specializing in association business strategy.

Thank you for your time and your contribution to this important research project. We will be sharing the results of this study this winter.
