Money isn’t what draws people to a career in education. People choose education because they want to make a difference—to change lives and impart wisdom to future generations.
We created Kids Deserve It as a place where the boundary pushers, innovators, and risk-takers could find their tribe. Could be celebrated. Could be accelerated. Could be embraced. Could have the permission they’ve never had before!
We wanted to eliminate excuses. To create a space where we continually showed examples of people doing exceptional things for kids despite overwhelming odds stacked against them.
We wanted to encourage. To be a light in the midst of darkness. To spread a message of hope.
We wanted to push people out of their comfort zones. To challenge the status quo. To make you just a little bit uncomfortable, yet willing to try something new.
But we are also a place that seeks to rally educators. Now is the time that we must stand up. We must fight for our schools. For our communities. For our funding. For our children.
With that being said, there have been a few times in my life where I’ve been silent, where I’ve turned my head and didn’t speak up and those are all times that I regret. In the moment it’s clear inside my body that something isn’t right and for reasons that can’t be explained, I don’t stand up, I don’t speak up.
One thing is now very clear to me, I’m going to be an upstander! Bystanders won’t fight for kids, for teachers, for administrators, for parents, for students that have learning disabilities or speak another language. Upstanders will!
We have to celebrate ALL achievements, nothing can go unnoticed. We have to offer unwavering support for our colleagues and communities when they come under attack from people who haven’t and won’t take the time to visit and talk about what’s working and worth celebrating in our schools.
I’m committed to being an upstander and telling anyone who will listen about all the bright spots, all the magic moments, all the wins that we celebrate and see everyday in our schools.
Who’s with me?!
#KidsDeserveIt is our rallying cry. It’s our opportunity to remind the world why we do what we do. Why we push forward in spite of opposition and negativity. Why? Because we all know #KidsDeserveIt
