November 2017
Striking Solutions - Thursday, December 7, 2017

Are you game? Pin down December 7 on your calendar and join our league of association professionals and industry partners where you'll participate in a formal session of WSAE's Solutions Network. We'll then use our spare time for a  fun, and slightly competitive, end-of-year bowling celebration. Spoke leaders will provide updates on accomplishments and challenges faced over the past year and answer your questions. Then, you'll have a chance to score some valuable information as you select your favorite spoke or split your time between spokes. The Solutions Network is the place for members to ask questions, seek solutions, and discover new trends and practices.  We'll have a ball!

The Solutions Network spokes that are currently scheduled to meet at this event:
  • Industry Partner
  • Marketing
  • Meetings
  • Membership
  • Online Education
  • Young Professionals
The event will be held at the Village Bowl in Menomonee Falls. Participation is worth 1.5 credits toward CAE application or renewal.

Professional Development

2018 Winter IOM

For over 95 years, Institute for Organization Management, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation's professional development program for non-profit executives, has educated association, chamber, and other nonprofit leaders across the country through its national program, highly rated curriculum and high caliber instructors. Thousands of executives have attended Institute sites across the country to strengthen their management skills, learn industry best practices, and gain a broad national perspective from peers. Institute has helped them build stronger organizations, become stronger business advocates and better serve their members. In addition, you will earn points towards your CCE or CAE certification as Institute's curriculum is directly tied to the bodies of knowledge of both the American Society of Association Executives and the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives.

Upon completion of the Institute program, graduates receive the IOM recognition which allows them to use the letters "IOM" in public mention and professional correspondence. The IOM recognition signifies the completion of 96 hours of course instruction in nonprofit management and commitment to the industry.

For more information about Institute's curriculum, sites, and dates, visit the Institute web site and Prospective Student Toolkit to help you gain insight into the program. Are you already an IOM and have an updated job or title? Update your contact information and stay connected.

Save the date - ASAE American Associations Day
American Associations Day, planed for March 21-22 in 2018, is the only legislative fly-in where association professionals like us can connect with Congressional offices and share our stories on important association issues. This year, our focus will be on the value of association meetings to the economy and society along with association tax issues. This unique opportunity allows you, as an association professional, to create connections with policy-makers that will not only advance the association industry, but your own organization as well.

The event is open to any association executive, staff member, or leadership volunteer that is passionate about association issues and wants to make a difference, as well as meet and network with fellow advocates from across the country. Registration is free, and out-of-town attendees are eligible to receive a scholarship of up to $300 to reimburse travel costs if they visit their members of Congress. The education session on March 21 is worth 3.5 CAE credit hours.

Legislative Updates

Senate tax bill impacting associations

Last week, the Senate Finance Committee approved the GOP plan to overhaul the tax code. Approval came after four days of revisions, which included removing a provision that would have eliminated nonqualified deferred compensation arrangements for nonprofit employers like associations.

ASAE and many others made the case that doing away with these deferred compensation plans would have hurt nonprofit employees who in good faith entered into contractual agreements with their employers, and would have hurt nonprofit employers in attracting and retaining top talent.

While it's good that this provision has been removed from the Senate bill (and was removed from the House bill as well), ASAE will stay vigilant as the tax bill advances to ensure the issue doesn't resurface.

The Senate bill still contains several provisions of concern, however, and there is still an opportunity to change this bill before it hits the Senate floor, probably just after Thanksgiving.

Chief among those concerns is a provision that would tax royalty income derived from the licensing of an organization's name or logo. ASAE has been making the case that expansion of the UBIT statute to include royalty income could significantly impact any association's bottom line, directly affecting its ability to carry out its mission.

Royalties are a significant source of non-dues revenue for associations that can be reinvested in education, skills training, standard-setting, research and other activities. Royalties also closely resemble other passive income for tax-exempt organizations - such as rent, interest and dividends - which may not be directly mission-related but are excluded from UBIT. Royalties should not be taxed when there is little service offered by the tax-exempt organization in return for the payment.

ASAE has sent a letter on the royalty income provision to Finance Committee Chairman Hatch and other committee members, but we need help in communicating that this provision is bad for associations' business model. Please feel free to adapt this letter and send your own organization's message to the Hill if this issue concerns you.

Additionally, if you have a relationship with any Republican senator serving on the Senate Finance Committee who you can approach about this issue, please contact ASAE's Public Policy team at 202.626.2703 or email  publicpolicy@asaecenter.org

The provision to tax royalty income is not in the bill that the House passed, but if it stays in the Senate bill it could become law once the Senate and House negotiate the differences in their bills. Now is the time to weigh in on this important issue.

ASAE to host tax reform discussion

Associations that represent every sector and industry face the possibility of major changes in tax law. This program will review the major players in Congress and the administration, as well as identify congressional procedure that will affect the process.
