As a practicing physician for over 30 years, many of my patients have aged along with me.
As I see them, year after year, common comments I hear: "I'm slowing down." "I'm getting old." You are what you think. How about thinking differently?
How about saying:
"I'm going to be Healthier Next Year." "I'm going to be Younger in 2018."
Crazy? Heck no! It's what I decided to do last November 2016 when I turned 64. I told myself I wanted to be healthier and happier when I turned 65 in November 2017, and I came up with a plan to make it happen. I picked up my pace on the treadmill, got more aggressive with my muscle strengthening program, critiqued my caloric intake a bit more, committed to a few minutes of daily meditation, worked on relationships with family and friends to improve my social well-being, and created a greater awareness of my connection with a higher power. The results: I turned 65 this week, and I DO feel younger, healthier, and happier. I'm also faster and have more muscle mass than last year.
Ironically, a few days before my 94-year old dad was killed in a propane gas explosion in June of this year, I had spent the day with him and asked him: "Dad, when are you going to get old?" He looked at me perplexed and replied: "I don't know. I never thought about that." Dad lived a life of vigor, of passion, which is why he made it to 94 still with an amazing quality of life, living on his own, driving all over the country, going to the gym 4 days a week. He didn't focus on getting old. He focused on what would keep him healthy and happy.
How can WE be younger next year?
