"
Fishermen know that the sea is dangerous and the storm terrible, but they have never found these dangers sufficient reason for remaining ashore." - Vincent van Gogh
Sometimes we forget that fear is a choice. As Vincent van Gogh quoted in a letter to his younger brother Theo van Gogh, "Let the storm rise, the night descend - which is worse, danger or the fear of danger?"
This painting highlights the struggles between fear and freedom expressed through the chaos of a dark storm over the sea. We have a choice to live in fear or stand up to it. Sometimes risks are meant to be taken.
