Wen Tapped As Guest Speaker for Edmunds Lecture

Leana S. Wen, MD, MSc, FAAEM, was en route to speak at an endowed lecture at the School of Nursing on Oct. 26 when President Trump declared the opioid crisis a public health emergency, leaving Baltimore City's health commissioner with many questions. Wen's remarks about Trump's declaration were at the forefront of her address in the Millicent Geare Edmunds Lecture, part of the 2017-18 Dean's Lecture Series.

Four Faculty Members, Five Alumnae, and a DNP Student Selected to AAN's 2017 Class of Fellows

Nursing faculty members, five alumnae, and a student were inducted in to the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) as fellows during the academy's annual meeting and conference held last month in Washington, D.C.

associate professor and associate dean of the Doctor of Nursing Practice program; Yolanda Ogbolu, PhD '11, MS '05, BSN '04,
CRNP-Neonatal, assistant professor and director, Office of Global Health; Charlotte Seckman, PhD '08, RN-BC, associate professor; and Shari Simone, DNP '11, MS '96, CPNP-AC, PPCNP-BC, FCCM, FAANP, assistant professor, were the UMSON faculty members inducted into AAN's 2017 class of fellows. Antol Named UMB's Public Servant of the Year

Susan Antol, PhD, MS '79, RN, assistant professor, was named the University of Maryland, Baltimore's 2017 Public Servant of the Year during its annual Founders Week. Antol is the     ninth UMSON faculty member to receive a Founders Week Award since the celebration was initiated in 1996.

School of Nursing Covering Accelerated Course Costs for Community College Students Through Conway Gift

The University of Maryland School of Nursing is covering the cost of its Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) courses for community college students participating in its Dual-Admission Partnership with seven community colleges statewide. Funds from a gift from Bill and Joanne Conway through their Bedford Falls Foundation make possible this opportunity for students to begin taking courses toward their BSN degree at no cost while completing their Associate Degree in Nursing. The funds will be available for the spring, summer, and fall 2018 semesters.

Burda Elected Director at Large of the Board of the International Nurses Society on Addictions

Charon Burda, DNP '16, MS '03, PMHCNS, PMHNP-BC, CARN-AP, assistant professor and director, Doctor of Nursing Practice Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner - Family specialty, has been elected director at large of the board of the International Nurses Society on Addictions (IntNSA). Burda has been a member of IntNSA since 2010 and will serve a two-year term. Read more
McLaine Receives Rosalie Silber Abrams Legislative Award
 
Patricia McLaine, DrPH, MPH, RN, assistant professor and director, Community/Public Health Nursing master's specialty, recently received the 2017 Maryland Nurses Association's (MNA) Rosalie Silber Abrams Legislative Award. The award is given to an MNA member who has made a significant contribution on behalf of nursing in the legislative arena on the federal, state, or local levels. Read more. 
Wiseman Receives MNA's Outstanding Pathfinder Award
 
Rebecca Wiseman, PhD '93, RN, associate professor and chair of the University of Maryland School of Nursing's program at the Universities at Shady Grove, was awarded the Maryland Nurses Association's (MNA) Outstanding Pathfinder Award. MNA's Outstanding Pathfinder Award is presented to an MNA member who has demonstrated excellence and creative leadership that fosters the development of the nursing profession. Read more.

Colloca Writes Article for Science Magazine on Nocebo Effect

To provide the public with a better understanding of recent ground-breaking research on the nocebo effect, Luana Colloca, MD, PhD, associate professor, has written a Perspectives article, "Nocebo Effects Can Make You Feel Pain," published in Science magazine. The nocebo effect occurs when a person has a negative expectation of a treatment outcome, leading to adverse effects that otherwise might not occur. Read more.
Study Looks At Vaginal Health

Mary Regan, PhD, RN, associate professor, has been studying how vaginal health plays a key role in preventing disease that can lead to infertility and cancer. She is looking to recruit up to 200 women between the ages of 18 and 44 for the study. Participants will be asked to complete a brief questionnaire and self-collect urine and vaginal samples, and will be compensated $20. Learn more.

Mueller-Burke and Colleagues Using UMNursing Research Grant to Assess Sedation Safety in Children

Dawn Mueller-Burke, PhD '01, MS '98, CRNP, NNP-BC, assistant professor, is teaming with UMSON faculty member Shari Simone, DNP '11, MS '96, CRNP-AC, PPCNP-BC, FCCM, FAANP, assistant professor, and some UMMC colleagues on a $14,800 UMNursing Collaborative Grant for the joint research project, Testing Reliability, Validity and Clinical Utility of the Richmond Agitation and Sedation Scale in Spontaneously Breathing Children Undergoing a Procedure, which they hope will prevent future sedation/agitation complications in a young population. School Seeking Adjunct Professors and Preceptors
 
UMSON is seeking adjunct faculty members and preceptors. The School hires adjunct faculty members to provide clinical instruction to entry-level students in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program and the Clinical Nurse Leader master's option. UMSON is also seeking skilled, experienced preceptors to work with students as they complete their clinical requirements.

Sabol Elected President of GAPNA, Earns Research Award
 
Valerie Sabol, PhD '09, ACNP-BC, GNP-BC, ANEF, FAANP, was recently inaugurated as president of the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association (GAPNA), for the 2017-18 term. Additionally, she earned GAPNA's Award for Excellence in Research in recognition of her commitment to research in nursing that has benefited the geriatric community. Learn more.
Alumna Tanner Presents in Thailand
 
Ibby Tanner, PhD, MS '74, BSN '70, RN, FAAN, was invited to speak in Thailand at the 5th International Nursing Research Conference sponsored by the Thailand Nursing and Midwifery Council and the World Academy of Nursing Science. She lectured and provided consultations about interprofessional education and gerontological nursing education at Mahidol University for faculty and doctoral students. Read more.

UMSON students and alumni can access professional career services through the Student Success Center. Services include a job board, resume and cover letter writing workshops, interviewing skills workshops, mock interviews, and online resources.
Docents Needed for Living History Museum
   
The UMSON Living History Museum is seeking alumni volunteers to serve as docents. The museum is open 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the academic semesters. Docents are also needed for occasional special events, such as school tours and open houses for new and prospective students. Bindon, DNP '11, MS '96, RN-BC, CNE, assistant professor, presented a one-day workshop, "Energizing Nurse Educators," for the South Eastern Michigan Nursing Staff Development Organization's (SEMNSDO) annual fall conference in Detroit, Michigan. SEMNSDO is a regional affiliate of the national Association for Nursing Professional Development.

Karen Wickersham, PhD, RN, assistant professor, recently received the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association's (GAPNA) Research Project Award at the 36th Annual Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, for a research podium presentation entitled, "Targeted Therapy Use in Adults with Cancer ≥ 85 Years of Age." It was funded by GAPNA and UMSON's Biology and Behavior Across the Lifespan. Additionally, four UMSON students, Molly Crothers, Danielle Puth, and Miriam Weiss, from the BSN program, and CNL student Kendall Powell, were part of the research team and presentation.
