Now live: Gold Foundation's Practical Applications of Humanism Database
The Arnold P. Gold Foundation is proud to announce a new, free resource for health professions educators, students, and academic and corporate leaders: the Practical Applications of Humanism Database . This new database is available on the Gold Foundation website as a curated repository of studies, tools, webinars, curriculum guides, and much more, all designed to help foster humanistic care, in education and in practice. "We hope people will reach out to us with more entries and that this will become a “go-to” resource for those looking for strategies to implement humanistic practice," said Elizabeth Cleek, PsyD, Chief Program Officer.
Golden highlights from 2018 AAMC Learn Serve Lead meeting in Austin
The stellar annual meeting of the Association of American Medical College drew more than 4,500 clinicians, faculty members, students and supports for engaging discussions, lectures, and workshops around medical education. The importance of humanism felt alive across the conference. The Gold Foundation hosted three sessions:
  • the Jordan J. Cohen Humanism in Medicine Lecture, presented this year by Dr. George Thibault, which was a remarkable and illuminating talk that brought the room to tears. Dr. Thibault looked frankly at the state of humanism broadly. “It will be very difficult to have humanism in medicine if we do not have humanism in our world,” he said.
  • the Organization of Student Representatives (OSR) Luncheon and Ceremony, honoring Dr. Mark Garry with the 2018 Arnold P. Gold Humanism in Medicine Award.
  • a Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) workshop that highlighted the impact GHHS chapters have on their students, medical school, and medical centers.

Finally, we were especially delighted to celebrate Drs. Sylvia and Richard Cruess, who were presented the 2018 Abraham Flexner Award for Distinguished Service to Medical Education. Dr. Richard Cruess is the Chairman of the Board of the Gold Foundation for Humanistic Healthcare, Canada.

Gold grantee Dr. Helen Riess releases new book, "The Empathy Effect"
Dr. Helen Riess, one of the leading researchers around empathy, has a new book out:  The Empathy Effect: 7 Neuroscience-Based Keys for Transforming the Way We Live, Love, Work, and Connect Across Differences.” The Gold Foundation has been proud to support Dr. Riess' work through several grants since 2014. Gold Foundation President and CEO Dr. Richard Levin received an early copy and concluded that Dr. Riess "describes in the simplest terms the neurobiology of empathy and why it is critical to healthcare and every other service offered to humans. She succeeds brilliantly in the challenge of her title, to transform life, love, work and human connection.”

Michigan Women's Hall of Fame inducts GHHS member Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha
Dr. Hanna-Attisha was instrumental in exposing the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, and bringing it to national attention. On October 16, 2018, the Gold Foundation was proud to sponsor three Gold Humanism Honor Society members from Dr. Hanna-Attisha's alma mater, Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, to attend her induction into the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame. Remember the Gold Foundation & humanism in your year-end giving
We hope you will put humanism in healthcare at the top of your list of year-end giving. And during the month of December, anyone who makes a donation to The Arnold P. Gold Foundation will be entered into a drawing to win Dr. Rana Awdish’s book, “In Shock: My Journey from Death to Recovery and the Redemptive Power of Hope.” It is an incredibly insightful and gripping true story of an ICU physician who became a patient in her own hospital, and who had new epiphanies about how important connection is to healing. It is one of our very favorite books of 2018.
Donate today on our website or by mail at: The Arnold P. Gold Foundation, 619 E. Palisade Avenue, Englewood Cliffs, NJ 07632.
