Ceremonial Opening of $1.5 million Off Leash Dog Area

On Saturday, November 17, 2018, the official ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at Monticello Park located at 5313 Guinea Road in Burke, VA. The much-anticipated event marks the completion of construction and brings new recreational amenities to this neighborhood including an obstacle course/playground, off-leash dog park, multi-use area and trails. The $1.5 million-dollar project was funded via voter-approved Park Bonds.

The Park Foundation will recognize Braddock Dogs, a volunteer group dedicated to the development and maintenance of off-leash dog areas (OLDA) in the Braddock District, helped to raise more than $14,000 via nearly 150 donations to FCPF.

The public is cordially invited to join in the celebration with Braddock District Supervisor John Cook and members of the Fairfax County Park Authority Board. The 3 p.m. ceremony will include brief remarks, followed by light refreshments and an opportunity to enjoy the new amenities.

Braddock District Supervisor John Cook said of Monticello Park, "Doggonnit. Dogs are people too! Now there is a park for our furry friends. Come celebrate the opening of Braddock's newest park."  For more information please contact the FCPA Public Information Office at 703-324-8662.

JPMF Celebrates 20 Years at Our Special Harbor
and seeks Volunteers for SPLASH program
Supervisor Jeff McKay, Heather Lynch and Dave Bowden recognize Paola & Robert Pizzano to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Joey Pizzano Memorial Fund (JPMF)!  The JPMF Family Fun Day on September 8th marked the season finale at the popular Our Special Harbor sprayground which added new features in 2018!
Even in the off-season, the Joey Pizzano Memorial Fund partners with NCS to provide a fun and educational water safety program for individuals with disabilities.
Volunteer swim buddies are the heart of the JPMF Splash Program.  A Splash instructor leads the water safety program for participants with a broad range of disabilities while each swim buddy is paired with a participant while in the water.  Swim buddies help the participants follow the directions of the instructor by keeping them on task and ensuring their individual abilities and needs are met.  Volunteer opportunities are available, contact Kaitlynne.temple@fairfaxcounty.gov for more information.
Combined Federal, Commonwealth of Virginia and United Way Campaigns Begin
Are you or a family member a Federal or State of Virginia employee? If so, readers are encouraged to designate the Fairfax County Park Foundation to receive their contributions during these fall campaigns. Many companies participate in the United Way.
While donation procedures may have changed from last year, the key is to remember to designate funds to FCPF. All donations are greatly appreciated!
Look for the campaign logos and the numbers assigned to the Park Foundation to give through payroll deduction at your workplace.
FCPA Sites Receive American Alliance of Museums Accreditation
by David and Carol Ochs
FCPA RMD attractions and  archaeology dig take the cake with AAM.
Schools are accredited to show they meet a certain level of educational excellence. The same is true of museums, and in 1979 the Fairfax County Park Authority became the first county agency in the nation accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM). Today, the news is even better.
On August 6, 2018, AAM granted accreditation for the Resource Management Division (RMD) which oversees the Park Authority's Historic Artifact Collections and Archaeological Collections, reccreditation for Sully Historic Site, Colvin Run Mill, and Green Spring Gardens and the first-time accreditation for Frying Pan Farm Park.
"It is an honor and a privilege to have been reaccredited by the American Alliance of Museums," said current Park Services Division Director Cindy Walsh, who headed the Resource Management Division during the reaccreditation process. "This validates our commitment to excellence and dedication to meeting the highest standards for our museums and collections. More importantly, it demonstrates our assurance to county residents that we will continue to preserve and protect Fairfax County's important heritage."

Honor the Life of a Loved one in Your Parks
The loss of a family member or friend can be a difficult time. Families often request donations to a specific charity. Some use the following wording: "in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Fairfax County Park Foundation".
If a family chooses the Park Foundation to be a recipient, a call or email to the Park Foundation is helpful to ensure that the name and address of the bereaved family is known and their wishes can be honored. Requests to remain anonymous are honored. The family will be
notified that a memorial donation has been received.
The Fairfax County Park Foundation's Bench and Tree Sponsorship program provides an opportunity to honor the memory of a relative or friend or recognize a birthday, wedding, anniversary, retirement or other special event.
Your tax deductible donation will underwrite the cost of the bench or tree and its installation. Park Authority staff will install a recognition plaque on each donated bench. Since plaques are not permitted for trees or other living landscape elements, you or your designee will receive a special certificate for each commemorative tree.
The Park Foundation was recently honored to receive memorial donations from the family and friends of Frank de La Fe, former FCPA Chairman, who signed the Articles of Incorporation for the Park Foundation on December 22, 2000.
Please contact Margaret Thaxton at 703-324-8532 for more information about memorial donations. See more about FCPF Commemorative Bench Program.
