Counselling for Everyone
Did you know that our counselling services primarily located at our new YW Hub facility are open to the public? YW Calgary offers individual, family and group counselling for women, men and children. In an effort to make counselling accessible to everyone in the community, YW uses an affordable and flexible fee structure based on a sliding scale.

We all need support from time to time, whether we’re a parent or child. YW works to help clients develop strategies that promote mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness and resiliency. In addition to individual counselling, YW also offers counselling for families. Parents and their children (ages 4-17) are provided with a safe and supportive environment to build stronger relationships and a healthy future.

Group counselling is another affordable way to help you build a healthy future in a safe and supportive environment. Groups are typically organized around a specific focus and offered on a recurring basis. Building Healthy Relationships, Dialectal Behavioral Therapy and Skills for Healthy Parenting are just some of the groups we offer. YW Counselling is a key support in working through isolation, substance and domestic abuse.

YW Community Spaces
Event Space at YW Calgary
The Community Spaces at YW Calgary are part of our long-term sustainability strategy. The Fitness Center, Community Kitchen and Community Rooms were developed to welcome and bring our community together in ways that generate revenue and in turn supports our many programs and services. The facility is designed to be a safe and welcome space where community members can gather and where families can learn and grow together. Safety has been integrated in every aspect of the facility and designed to be unobtrusive like the floor to ceiling windows in the community spaces, which offer ample natural light during daylight hours and become highly visible rooms in the evening.

Since opening to the public on October 1st, the community spaces have been rented for a variety of functions including everything from workshops and meetings to birthday parties and even a small wedding. With December fast approaching we are looking forward to booking holiday parties. Our Community Hub Coordinator, Kathryn Quick would be happy to help organize your next event.

Understanding Safety
for Vulnerable Populations
Safety is a cornerstone of all operations at YW Calgary and influences everything from programs and services to facility management and was a primary driver in our building design.

When considering safety in the context of our transitional housing program, it`s important to understand that the women accessing these services have been impacted by high levels of trauma throughout their lifespan. Women bring their experiences of inequity, discrimination, oppression, poverty, violence and abuse into their interactions with those providing services. Applying a safety first approach means building safe, respectful relationships with women so they can focus on building choice and control over their lives and decisions. Safety then becomes a crucial element of a woman`s success in gaining independence.

Safety is a primary pillar of The YW's Practice Framework, a set of guidelines that help YW staff ensure women and their families feel safe, physically and emotionally, while receiving services at YW. Our client-services staff have been trained in Non-Violent Conflict Intervention, Suicide Prevention & Intervention and The Brain Story Certification. Brain Story is an online course that provides in-depth research on brain development and its consequences for lifelong health. Resources like Brain Story can help expert and non-expert audiences build a trauma-informed perspective, plus it is available to everyone for free online.
