November 2019: Giving Back

Spotlight on Movember:

We've all seen the glorious moustaches, the handlebars, the "Captain Hook" and the "Caveman". Have you ever wondered WHY? You may notice that during the month of November, men from all walks of life participate in growing out their facial hair in ridiculous and creative ways to show their support for Movember. Movember Canada is a leading charity that strives to take on the challenges facing men's mental health. Prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention and awareness are the main pillars of what Movember is trying to bring to the forefront of conversation and education.

Since 2003, over 1,250 men's health projects have been funded across the globe and changing the way that health services reach and are provided to men.

With a variety of different ways to get involved, Movember has grown into a global initiative that doesn't seem to be slowing down. How can you get involved?

Grow a Mo', Save a Bro

Men (and women) are encouraged to grow a moustache or facial hair, sign up at Movember.com to create your fundraising page, and get friends and family members to donate! You don't have to go it alone either! You can start a team, or even organize a competition between multiple offices at your workplace. It's a great way to team-build and to encourage some positive and healthy competition among coworkers. Hey! It's great for a few laughs too...

Move for Movember

Over the course of November, or Movember, any one can run or walk 60 kilometres and once you've set up your donation web page, you can start collecting from others to help cheer you on!

Everyone is encouraged to get involved and to give back in whatever way they can. With December approaching quickly, Movember has created a great initiative committed to help those who may be struggling and who may not have the supports needed during the holiday season. You can find out more information at www.movember.com.

Remembrance  Day:

Remembrance Day is observed on November 11 to remember those who served and gave their lives in World War I in 1918. Since then, individuals across Canada gather on November 11 to show their support and give thanks to those brave soldiers. Each year, red poppies are worn and a moment of silence is taken at 11 am.

St. Catharines:

Community members are invited to City Hall and the Cenotaph in Memorial Park for ceremonies:
  • 10:15 a.m - Veterans will lay wreaths at the Honour Rolls and Watson Memorial and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 24 Cenotaph, followed by the Last Post
  • Veterans and Legion members will then march through streets of downtown to the Cenotaph at Memorial Park for the service at 11 am
Also on November 11, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 138 will hold a service at 10:40 am and the Imperial Veterans Association will hold a service at 11:00 am.

Niagara Falls:

A ceremony will be held at the Gale Centre on November 11 commencing at 10:45 am.

Lest we forget.
What's Cook'n Niagara?
Fall in Niagara is more than just the changing of leaves...it also signals the start of seasonal menus. With a specialty in farm-to-table cooking, and creative menus that are constantly changing, the following restaurants have solidified themselves as our top 3 to try out next time you're in Niagara:

Tucked discretely into a plaza on Lake Street, the Yellow Pear has earned a loyal following from those in the know. With only 28 seats in the restaurant, reservations are a must if you are trying to get in for their infamous brunch. The eggs benedict is absolutely delicious and there's a reason why it's what they're known for. Using a farm to truck/kitchen approach, all of the food offerings are fresh, creative and packed with flavour.

Located in Fonthill, Root & Bone is a quiet star with a focus on community, local and organic goods and a dedication to bold and flavourful cooking. The Executive Chef, Raymond Taylor, comes from a premium-dining, culinary background and decided to get back to the roots of what cooking is all about: bringing people together by sharing some great food.
