President's Message

As I look back on the President's Messages from this year, I noted a theme....they have been sort of long. However, that's because we've had a terrific year with lots of positive news to share. Let me share this next bit of news more efficiently:

I-Day 2019 is going to be great. You should register today.

November 14 will be my 10th I-Day event, and each one has been excellent. As you'll note above, we have three industry-leading speakers, the incoming Society President to confer our new designees, plentiful networking opportunities, and more. Past President and 2018 Burkhalter Award recipient Jeff Jeffus will be on hand to recognize our 2019 Burkhalter Award recipient, Cerie Garton. Many of you knew Cerie as a great friend and mentor. She packed a smile wherever she went and was a loyal volunteer with our Chapter for many years. We are honored to have her sister at I-Day to accept this honor on Cerie's behalf.

I hope you'll join me, our new designees, students of Waukee Apex, and other insurance professionals  on November 14. Remember that you don't need to be a CPCU to attend - anyone interested is welcome to join us. You'll be glad you did.

Stay warm out there, and we'll see you in a couple weeks in West Des Moines as we move "Together Toward Tomorrow."

Chris Murphy, CPCU Iowa Chapter President

New Designee Spotlight
Andrea D. Kirk, CPCU, ARM
Project Lead, Wells Fargo

I grew up in Virginia and attended college at Virginia Tech, where I received my Bachelor of Science in Business Economics. I started work at GEICO following graduation, learning about automobile insurance. I moved from Customer Service to New Business Underwriting, ending my time in the Retention Department.  Each change in position brought new challenges and knowledge. I currently live in Clive Iowa and work for Wells Fargo as a Project Lead on the Data Privacy Initiative.

I started studying for my CPCU designation when I was working for Berkley Agribusiness in the Risk Control Department. I had completed the Associate In Risk Management designation, and my manager and mentor, Mondale Smith, encouraged me to continue my personal development by pursuing my Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter. I was honored to receive the Presidential Scholarship from The Institutes.

The depth of knowledge gained while studying for the CPCU tests has proved helpful. It allowed me to better understand the many facets that feed into comprehensive underwriting for commercial properties. Enlarging my knowledge from automobile insurance to commercial property and casualty coverage.  As I moved into the Strategic Operations department a larger base of knowledge definitely helped me to understand what Underwriters and Assistant Underwriters were doing so I could assist in streamlining the processes.

With my newfound free time, I am enjoying sewing. I am finishing a Christmas tree skirt that waited patiently while I studied. I will also enjoy reading for fun, time outside, and traveling around Iowa without bringing along a CPCU book.
