November comes
And November goes,
With the last red berries
And the first white snows.
With night coming early,
And dawn coming late,
And ice in the bucket
And frost by the gate.
The fires burn
And the kettles sing,
And earth sinks to rest
Until next spring.

Jeanette's pantry is looking a little sparse! |
|
People like to donate food during the holidays, and
Kitchen Angels is seeking some food items to fill our emergency food pantry. If you want to hold a food drive for us through your neighborhood, church, organization, or work, please pass along this list of items we could use.
Peanut butter, pop top or pouches of tuna fish, soup, canned vegetables, crackers, protein/nutritional bars, snack packs (such as trail mix, peanut butter crackers, granola, etc.), bags of beans and rice, and jars of pasta sauce.
We run out of these food items first, as people who are experiencing homelessness find them the most useful.
Please resist giving us your expired or dented cans of food. We typically can't use opened food items, condiments or baking ingredients.
Many thanks for the assistance!

Our first Feasting with Friends event series was very successful. With 18 parties registered, 13 have already been held and have raised $13,000!
There's still time to participate!
Help us get to 20 parties by hosting a meal in November. Some delicious meals have included Korean, Italian, Moroccan, New Mexican and Spanish themes as well as brunches and gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches!
Don't forget to RSVP for the 2019 Angel Awards Banquet by Monday, November 4th. We love celebrating our volunteers and recognizing the amazing things you do! Our volunteer appreciation parties are a great way to get to know other Kitchen Angels on different shifts.
The party will be at the Eldorado Hotel in the Anasazi room. There will be a banquet with chicken, beef, and vegetarian options, wine, and a no-host bar. For non-volunteer spouses and significant others, we ask for a $25 donation to attend.
We will have live music. Suggested attire is "Santa Fe festive," (which is always open to ones own interpretation). Valet parking will be available at a reduced rate of $7.50, or you can park across the street in the parking garage for $5.
Please join us. It will be a fun and festive event.

Tasty Tidbits
This year we have received an amazing abundance of fruit, vegetables and herbs. Harvests have been prolific and people are struggling with what to make with their crops.
One of the easiest things to create is a shrub, a refreshing syrup to add to sparkling water or cocktails. With just chopped fruit, sugar, vinegar and time, you can make your own shrub. Here's an
article that gives good guidelines for making shrubs.

With the holiday season coming up, make shrubs for parties and bring some of the harvest ripeness into winter.
Jeanette is making prickly pear lavender and concord grape shrubs as well as special mixes as gifts! Let us know if you try it.
Did you have a bumper crop of apples this year? Remember, you don't have to make them all into apple sauce. Apples store for quite a long time if you prepare them correctly. Click here for some excellent information about
apple storage.
With summer coming to an end, we have returned to making
delicious soups for our clients. All vegetable scraps are being cooked down into vegetable broth, which serves as the base for our outstanding vegetarian soups. As we draw nearer to Thanksgiving, Joe has been talking about making a pumpkin apple soup with some of the veggie stock. He's made it at home and thinks it'll be a tasty treat for our clients.
Here's the recipe, which comes with some very interesting information about Botswana and the history of soup.

Continuing Education
Kitchen Angels is one of 400 agencies participating in the Beta-testing interval of a new program.
Listen4Good
(L4G) is a Fund for Shared Insight initiative designed to help nonprofits build sustainable, high-quality, client-focused feedback loops that lead to meaningful change. The goal is to provide widespread access to tools and resources that increase organizations' capacity to systematically listen and respond to their clients. Working with funders and nonprofits, L4G is building infrastructure and creating a community of organizations using client feedback to inform positive changes in the way we work, make decisions, deliver services, and relate to clients.
Since 2016, Shared Insight has awarded more than 200 L4G grants totaling $9.4 million, and enabled more than 122,000 individuals served by nonprofits nationwide to share their perspectives.
As L4G prepares to scale up in 2020, Kitchen Angels is participating in an 18-month "test-and-learn" phase focused on optimizing resources and building our own feedback capacity.

REMEMBER to use Amazon Smile while doing your online holiday shopping this year. For every purchase made through Amazon Smile, Kitchen Angels receives a portion of the sale. It's an easy way to contribute to your favorite nonprofit!

You may have noticed an increase in the number of tours we're giving here at
Kitchen Angels. Whenever you see
Tony or
Dwayne showing people our facility and speaking with them about our mission, please stop and say hello. We are actively engaging past, current, and potential future donors.
Joe has been generous with his time, providing outstanding lunches to our visiting guests. By reaching out with gratitude to these philanthropic individuals and groups, we ensure their ongoing support of our mission.
Our volunteers are such a vital apart of our work that we welcome your input. Don't be shy - tell our visitors why you volunteer and what it means to you. Thanks for helping us spread the word about the important work we're doing for our community!

Former client George M. and his delivery driver Michael

Sometimes we can't see the forest for the trees. As volunteers, you come in every week and do your task, forgetting the very human face of the people we're serving. Here's a little snapshot of some of our clients and how
Kitchen Angels has assisted them.
A.S. came on service because he was struggling with COPD and mental health challenges. When the home he had been living in was sold and he had to move, we transitioned service from his casita to a hotel. We are helping him secure case management services so that he can move to Albuquerque as he can no longer breathe properly in Santa Fe.
A.S. says, "Thank you for your help. It means so much to me and for anyone else that you help. Peace to you and blessings."
A.W. has been on service with Kitchen Angels for about a year now. Her list of ailments is long and includes esophageal stricture, making it very difficult for her to swallow. Being 44 years old, she is too young to receive service from Meals on Wheels. If it weren't for our meal delivery service, A.W. would have no way to get meals.
"I appreciate the drivers. It's just reassuring to know that someone is coming to the door and that they want to know how you are. It means the world to me."
You would be amazed to hear about some of the conditions with which our clients are living. Despite the sometimes extreme suffering, many take the time to let us know what a hot meal and friendly voice mean to them. We love hearing from our clients and wanted to pass along the gratitude.
