Shiloh Theberge - VP Fundraising & Strategic
Partnering

Havin
g served on the Board of Directors of the NCWBA for several years now, I am excited to be in the role of Vice President of Fundraising and Strategic Partnering. My goal for this year is to garner and strengthen the NCWBA's ties to other organizations and entities that support our mission - supporting women's bar associations.
I am a shareholder of the law firm Bernstein Shur in Portland, Maine, where I have practiced management-side labor and employment law for over ten years. I spend half of my time providing advice and counsel to employers, including drafting policies and handbooks, and providing employment law training. I spend the other half of my time representing employers in administrative proceedings and court. I like to say that I work hard to keep my employer clients out of trouble and, when trouble is unavoidable, I help them some more! The rest of my time is largely spent serving as a taxi to take my two boys (8 and 10) to sports games, music lessons, and the orthodontist.
When I first began practicing in Maine (from Pennsylvania), the Women's Law Section of the Maine State Bar Association (WLS) was so important to me. Knowing very few people at the time, the WLS served as a place where I was able to connect with other women attorneys, some of whom would become very close friends. After serving as Co-Chair of the WLS in Maine for two years, I moved on to serve on the Board of Directors of the NCWBA, mainly to give back to organizations and women who have supported me over the years. The personal relationships that I have formed as a result of the NCWBA have been invaluable!

NCWBA GOOD Guys Committee Expanding with 1st Male Member
|
NCWBA is very proud and excited to announce that Steven Velkei of Baute Crochetiere Hartley & Velkei has been nominated and approved by NCWBA's President, Jeanne Marie Clavere, to serve as a committee member of NCWBA's GOOD Guys Committee. It is believed that Steven is the first gentleman to hold a committee position. According to Teresa Beck, Chair of the GOOD Guys Committee, "One of the foundational principles of GOOD Guys is the belief that advancements in diversity, equity, and inclusion can only go so far without integrating the discussion with male leaders. We are thrilled that
Steven Velkei, who has been instrumental in GOOD Guys programs across the country, is now on our team. We are also
proud that NCWBA is "owning the change reaction" (our theme this year) and leading by example. It's time to get male leaders involved so that we can spark change!" Steven Velkei also commented: ""I am extremely honored,
and humbled, to be the first man to serve on the Good Guys Committee of the National Conference of Women's Bar Associations. Real difference will only happen when men join hands together with women in advocating for essential and long overdue equality in the workplace. Good Guys is the bridge that is helping make that goal a tangible reality. I am just one of the many "good guys" out there who want to make a difference, and I look forward to spending these next two years helping further this important mission. We owe it to ourselves and the generations to come to make a difference, and, to do it now." Welcome Steven Velkei to the GOOD Guys Committee of NCWBA!

NCWBA Awards Submission Period NOW OPEN!
|
Each year, the NCWBA recognizes significant accomplishments of member associations in two different categories: Public Service and Outstanding Member Program Awards. This year, the NCWBA is excited to announce a third category that will highlight the work being done by our newest members, women's law school organizations. In giving awards, we hope to inspire others to replicate or create similar programs, as well as to honor the good work of the volunteers. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2020 awards, to be presented at the Women's Bar Leadership Summit in Chicago on Friday, July 31. More information about each award can be found below and on our
website. For more information and nomination forms,
click here: Program & Public Service Award or
Law Student Award. Nominations will be accepted by email only until
Friday, January 24 at 9:00 pm PST. Questions?
Email us.
The Public Service Award is designed to recognize public service programs, projects or initiatives that NCWBA members have put together either for their own membership or the community at-large. There is a wide range of programs, projects and initiatives that may qualify under the umbrella of a public service program. Members are encouraged to broaden their perspective on what public service means and deepen our commitment as lawyers to our public service obligations. Check out the NCWBA's
website for inspiration from past award recipients.
The Outstanding Member Program Award is given to women's bar associations to highlight and recognize innovative and effective programs and projects for their members or the bar association itself. Member programs are as varied as our organizations, and we love to showcase the important work being done by women lawyers around the country. Prior awards recipients and descriptions of the programs previously recognized can be found
here.
Last month the NCWBA
announced free membership to women's law school organizations. As part of this exciting milestone, the NCWBA will honor a women's law school organization at its 2020 Women's Bar Leadership Summit. Unlike the other two categories, nominations for this award can be anything from a unique presentation, service project, panel discussion or other initiative. Be creative: the sky's the limit! We invite you to share this and information about NCWBA's new membership option with a women's law school organization in your network.
If your organization has developed a program that has benefited its members or members of the community, it may be one that other organizations will seek to replicate. Applying for our awards gives your program and organization national recognition for your efforts. Moreover, if your organization's program is selected to be honored at our yearly Summit, you will be invited to join us for our annual awards luncheon in Chicago with other vibrant and engaged women attorneys from all over the United States and Canada on Friday, July 31, 2020.
