New Work

Ojibwa Afternoon, Madeline Island    22" x 28"    $14,000

Discernment - Endeavoring to go deeper.

I don't believe the world really needs another picture.
It is enriched however by a thoughtful, sensitive, singular vision and each of us need to decide how we define that.
In my case it means greater discernment within all aspects of my painting.

I ask myself, have I distilled both the feeling & essence of my original vision?
How does my use of color harmony, shape, form, design and pattern serve to elevate the visual experience - and how can I achieve something more sublime without relying on exaggerations?
Nature doesn't need exaggeration to spellbind me - so, what am I lacking?

If I miss the mark it usually stems from two things:
1. My original idea was flawed  or
2. (As Rilke says) "I am not poet enough to call forth its riches"

What to do?
Here's my mantra:
Deepening my sensitivity increases my reception.
Deepening my reception allows for enhanced discernment.
Enhancing my discernment allows the possibility of finding the universal in the particular.

Finding the universal in the particular allows me the possibility of awakening to less obvious beauty -

And I love that.

New Workshops 2020

Madeline Island School of the Arts

Tucson campus on Tanque Verde Ranch

5-Day Plein Air Workshop, Tucson AZ

February 10th - 14th, 2020 (Monday - Friday)
"Tanque Verde Ranch at the MISA-West Campus is an ideal winter destination workshop for plein-air painters. Get out of the cold and join me at this peaceful and phenomenal desert setting."
This Plein-Air workshop is for more advanced students and they will receive plenty of individual attention. Your week at the Ranch will be filled with some of the best plein air painting locations in the Southwest. The Ranch is nestled in the Rincon Mountains with unparalleled opportunities to capture historic Western architecture and iconic Southwestern landscapes.
The objective of this workshop is to improve the clarity of your intention before the painting begins and ultimately achieve a more artistic statement.
If you wish to take your work to the next level, this workshop is for you.

Port Washington, Manhasset, NY
6-Day Studio Workshop: The Big Idea Creating a Large Painting in the Studio

March 16th - 21st, 2020 (Monday - Saturday)
This will be my fifth time teaching this highly-effective class. You will have the opportunity to implement a workable strategy for approaching a large work successfully indoors. Daily lectures will take you from concept to finish while making informed, personal choices.

Madeline Island School of Art
5-Day Plein Air Workshop, Wisconsin

July 6th - 10th, 2020 (Monday - Friday)
This will be my seventh year teaching at Madeline Island School of the Arts.

This is a great destination workshop. There is plenty of variety to paint and the staff does an incredible job keeping you comfortable at the School. The facility is top notch.
This workshop will introduce you to the Prismatic Palette and its use in helping you capture the myriad light effects you are faced with when painting en plein air.  Correct use of the Prismatic Palette will help you judge values, using warm and cool tones to bring things forward and to push things back, and to depict light and shade, and to describe the type and time of day.
