I hear it all the time – “My basic wardrobe is jeans and tee shirts. How can I look a little more ‘styled’ but still be comfortable?”
You don’t have to give up comfort to look a little more put together, or “styled.” Let's start with your jeans and a tee shirt. Best option is dark wash jeans with little or no detailing (top stitching, welts, grommets, etc). Add a solid color tee top in a non-clinging, stretchy fabric in a loose fit that doesn’t bind or require a tuck in. Now add a cotton velveteen blazer or a long vest or a scarf. You've gone from Plain Jane to Stylish Sue! You can create the same look with a pair of black, navy or brown pants (not leggings!) in a straight leg classic style in a stretch fabric that is cool and “breathable.” Add the tee top and now try a denim jacket to add a finished look. (Don't wear the denim jacket with the jeans, please.)
Shopping tip: I found some fabulous tee tops at Nordstrom Rack. The label is Halogen, which is a Nordstrom label. The fabric is to-die-for. You will want to wear this tee 24/7. And the price? $19.97 for the long sleeve version and $9.97 for the sleeveless. Several colors to choose from.
Add a long vest (mid-thigh length will cover all sorts of problem areas) in a lightweight, draping fabric.
You can’t beat a white button front shirt for an easy upgrade and there are many choices in great no-iron fabrics. Chico's has the best no-iron shirt around. Pair it with pants or jeans and add the denim jacket, blazer or vest.
Animal prints are always in style and a top that looks and fits like a tee shirt, but in an animal print, will jazz up any outfit.
Adding a scarf instantly makes any outfit look more styled. Don’t worry, there are plenty of scarves out there in lightweight fabrics that don’t cling and allow you to wear them with comfort.
