Kansas PRIDE's 50th Year Highlight: Lecompton PRIDE
Ron Wilson of the Huck Boyd Institute for Rural Development has done it again! He has highlighted a PRIDE community to promote the 50th year of the Kansas PRIDE Program through Kansas Profile. The Program in question, Lecompton PRIDE (as if you couldn't tell by the title I suppose ☺ - Jaime)!
To read AND listen to Ron's soothing and folksy voice, CLICK HERE.
Congratulations to Lecompton PRIDE for being highlighted, and for all PRIDE communities - you make this state great! - Jaime Menon, K-State Research and Extension PRIDE Co-Coordinator, jmenon@ksu.edu

PRIDE Community Happenings
Wichita's SoCe Neighborhood PRIDE team is in the process of planning an alley cleanup project. Their first project is Saturday, November 14th. An effort to educate business owners and residents of the importance of keeping the alleys clean and maintained is happening now, as well as a recruitment effort for volunteers. The group is working to improve their neighborhood one project at a time. Potwin PRIDE reports on their Ken Whittington Memorial Plant a Row for the Hungry garden project. By the end of September they had harvested 3,200 pounds (1.6 tons) of produce including: 291 lbs. of potatoes, 1,713 lbs. of tomatoes, 322 lbs. of turnips, and 186 lbs. of watermelon. Vegetables were given to the Potwin Food Bank, Salvation Army, and to the community as free-will donations on Mondays to help fund the garden (with $422 raised). Riverton PRIDE has started working on a walking trail. The Galena Fire Department provided a controlled burn to clear off the old grasses on the pasture and community members worked to disc the field and made plans to level it. Liberty Utilities has partnered with Riverton PRIDE for the use of the land and they will be providing a pollinator garden for the trail area. More activities from Riverton PRIDE can be found on their Facebook page. Ellis PRIDE partnered with the local Chamber and Tourism committee to begin the process of fixing signage in town (a suggestion from First Impressions). Fundraisers are currently being investigated to help with the projects. Take a look at some other things Ellis PRIDE has been up to on their Facebook page. The PRIDE program in Conway Springs (Conway Springs Development Foundation) has been busy learning how to run a rodeo which has also resulted in forging some new relationships... and speaking of relationships, they are also in talks with the Cardinals 4-H Club to use the Foundation's building for classes that serve those not involved in agriculture/animals. PRIDE happenings in Conway Springs are on their Facebook page as well.

Program Updates - New Faces!
Recently there came some new faces to the Kansas PRIDE Program Board, through our partners at K-State Research and Extension and the Kansas Department of Commerce. Join us in welcoming Dr. Rick Peterson, Associate Director of Agriculture and Natural Resources at K-State Research and Extension, and Kayla Savage, Community Development Division Director for the Kansas Department of Commerce!
|
|

Dr. Peterson is a Kansas native and is no stranger to Kansas State University. He earned his Bachelor of Science (Agriculture), Master of Science (Human Development and Family Therapy), and Doctor of Philosophy (Human Ecology Family Studies) at Kansas State University.
Dr. Peterson’s vast professional experience includes farming, serving as a Crisis Intervention Specialist with the Farmer Assistance and Training Service (the forerunner to our Kansas Agriculture Mediation Services), and as an Extension specialist at Virginia Tech University, Colorado State University, and Texas A&M AgriLife. How Are You 6-7 Months Into COVID?
There has been a lot happening over the last few months, and all that I can say is that it has been one interesting ride. There it is again, "interesting." I have yet to have someone join me in finding a new word for 2020, still open to suggestions though...
We are wanting to touch base with you to see how you are, and what you may need. We had a great response to the initial survey, and are hoping we can help you even more now! The response you give allows us to give a tailored response to your community, so please, take about 2 minute to fill out the survey provided - CLICK HERE or on the image to take the survey.
As always, thank you for all that you do! Take care, stay well, and don't hesitate to reach out to us! - Jaime Menon, K-State Research and Extension PRIDE Co-Coordinator, jmenon@ksu.edu

GRANT WRITING WORKSHOPS
Did you know that K-State Research and Extension's Nancy Daniels presents grant writing workshops (she also does First Friday E-Calls, another AWESOME resource for communities, which are listed on a link later in the newsletter)? Check out the link below for more grant workshop locations and registration information. Due to the current COVID-19 situation, some of the upcoming in-person workshop dates may be subject to change, so keep checking back here or on the website for updates. We are also working on an online format for the future. More details to come.

External Funding Opportunities
|
Want to put your new grant writing skills to use? Here are some opportunities for project funding outside of the Kansas PRIDE grants:
The American Academy of Dermatology awards public schools and non-profits up to $8,000 for purchasing and installing permanent shade structures in outdoor locations not protected by the sun (playgrounds, pools, recreation spaces). They also provide a sign for display near the structure. December 31, 2020 is the next deadline for this grant, so be sure to check it out at the link above for more details.
The National Gardening Association awards grants to non-profits, public or private schools, and youth programs in order to support school and youth educational garden projects that enhance the quality of life for students and their communities. Grants are available from $700 to $1,700 and the deadline to apply is December 18, 2020. More details are available by clicking on the link.
ecoTech™ Grants were created to combat the notion that students need to choose between “the screen” or “the green” and encourage educators and students to explore technology’s role in designing and implementing solutions to environmental challenges. If your PRIDE group works with schools or youth programs in your community, this $2,500 grant may be useful. Visit the link for more information and eligibility requirements. The current cycle closes January 15th.
MLK Day of Service Mini-Grants from the Kansas Volunteer Commission through AmeriCorps to host volunteer projects and service activities. The grant period is January 15-24, 2021, and the application deadline is December 9, 2020. Grants are for up to $500. More details can be found by clicking the link.

Additional Funding Resources
Is your Kansas PRIDE community looking for funding to help with certain projects? Let us know what the project is, how much you're seeking, and what your timeline looks like. We have access to a grants database and likely can give you some links to potential funding sources. Just email us at PRIDE@ksu.edu with your request and project idea. Not a Kansas PRIDE community? This resource is a great reason to join! You can also reach out to your local Extension office which should have access to the database as well. - Jan Steen, Kansas PRIDE Program Co-Coordinator, jmsteen@ksu.edu

Some wise words from our September-October 1997 Kansas PRIDE Newsletter. If you'd like to read that edition or any others, click on over to our Newsletter Archives page for more. You might find some historic treasures about your own community!

Up for a Community Visit? We Are, Too!
|
Our offer at the end of each newsletter is to come to your community so we can present an overview of the program, should you be interested in enrolling, or to discuss the program and any of its components or training modules in person if you’re already in the program. Travel restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 situation prevent us from visiting in person currently, but we still would be more than happy to host a Zoom meeting where your PRIDE group members, city council members, chamber participants, Masonic Lodge, or other groups could individually log in to see the presentation and ask questions. Just e-mail us at PRIDE@ksu.edu to set up a schedule.
To view pre-recorded webinars giving an introduction to the program, step-by-step instructions on how to enroll or report, fundraising, recruiting volunteers, and more, head over to our Education page for more. - Jan Steen, Kansas PRIDE Program Co-Coordinator, jmsteen@ksu.edu

Aside from posting news and information on the Kansas PRIDE Facebook Page between newsletters (we don't want to end up in your junk folder!), we (as in Jan and Jaime) are now hopping on Facebook Live on some Fridays for some education and small talk - and sometimes the odd trivia question! Join us on Fridays (usually around 10am or a bit later - Jan and I (as in mostly I) are still getting used to it!) for some learning opportunities!

Have a local event going on? Got great places to visit? Eat? Play?
Why not send your ads here and we will place them in our newsletter? You just have to send a high quality photo and the verbiage you want to use and we will place them in our newsletter for one month!
