10 New & Exciting Warm-Weather Retreats
Despite the continuing pandemic wreaking havoc on the travel industry, there is a bright spot: a spate of new hotels are set to open this winter and spring. We're excited to see both large and small hotel brands continuing with their expansion in spite of the gloomy conditions. We will dive more deeply into resort openings around the world in the January 2021 newsletter, but in this issue, we give you a small taste of the new warm-weather properties in and nearby the US.
Jamaica’s most anticipated new hotel opening in years will be the new centerpiece hotel of the Half Moon resort. The legendary property, only a 10-minute drive from the international airport in Montego Bay, just unveiled 57 rooms in a spectacular setting on the coast. The resort features three distinct styles of rooms: the Great House rooms feature sweeping views of the sea and large balconies; the Great House Open Suites have up to two bedrooms, as well as living and dining areas for a larger family option; and the Estate Homes have their own private entrances and up to four bedrooms, living and dining rooms as well as a butler pantry.

Eclipse opened last week and is offering an introductory offer that includes a $150 resort credit for bookings made before November 30, for at least a three-night stay.
New Englanders have long loved summering at the White Elephant, the picturesque hotel perched at Nantucket Harbor. Now, the brand has set its sights on another well-heeled destination, Palm Beach. They took over the landmarked Bradley Park Hotel, which dates back to the 1920s, on Sunset Avenue, and have updated the property while still embracing its Mediterranean-revival architectural roots. Open on November 4th, the 13 rooms and 19 spacious suites will be residential in scale with outdoor spaces and lush landscaping. Both penthouse suites will offer large living rooms with fully equipped kitchens and large outdoor terraces with coastal views. The hotel stands one street north of Royal Poinciana Way, Palm Beach’s original Main Street and less than two blocks from the Atlantic Ocean.
One&Only Mandarina opened its doors November 1st. It's located in Riviera Nayarit, about an hour north of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The property is out of the ordinary because it won’t have any standard issue guest rooms, instead offering a selection of 105 villas and “tree houses,” which have features like infinity pools, outdoor terraces, skylights, ocean views, spacious bathrooms, and outdoor showers. When not luxuriating in one’s villa, activities include sailing, fishing, and scuba diving, along with “miles” of jungle hiking trails and activities at the nearby Mandarina Polo & Equestrian Club. The massive kids club has numerous tree houses, a cinema, a butterfly garden, climbing walls, all designed by Brigitte Broch, a set decorator and designer who won an Academy Award for her work on the Baz Luhrmann film Moulin Rouge! One&Only has tapped one of Mexico’s most celebrated chefs, Enrique Olvera, to oversee the fine dining restaurant on property, Carao. Olvera’s menu reflects a broad spectrum of influence from Oaxaca to the modern Mediterranean.
The hottest new all-inclusive resort on the Caribbean circuit is the recently debuted Hammock Cove in Antigua, an intimate, boutique all-inclusive with spacious rooms, all of which have their own private plunge pools. Hammock Cove’s location on Antigua’s northeast coast is spectacular as its adjacent to Devil’s Bridge National Park with its famed limestone arch and soaring ocean geysers. The resort prides itself on three defining pillars: gastronomy, personalized service and uninterrupted luxury. Executive Chef Marco Festini brings Michelin-starred experience overseeing what will be the most inventive kitchen in the country. Another unique feature is the Guest Ambassadors who are available 24 hours a day to assist with any and all requests, offering personal assistant duties providing a seamless luxury experience.
This longstanding luxury property was damaged so badly by Hurricanes Maria and Irma it shuttered for four years to undergo major renovations, and will reopen in spring 2021 newly renamed as part of the Rosewood portfolio. The major assets of the property remain—18 beachfront acres on a private peninsula—alongside upgrades in amenities like a new pool, children’s club and fitness center as part of its rebirth.
The first-ever Kempinski-branded resort in the region opened earlier this year and has already brought a remarkable injection of new energy to what has long been one of the Caribbean’s most under-the-radar travel destinations. The 151-room hotel is adjacent to the historic Cabrits National Park and is the brainchild of the Caribbean’s hottest luxury hotel developer, Range Developments (which currently has a Six Senses in its Caribbean pipeline in Grenada).
The latest chapter in St Maarten’s inspiring tourism comeback after being battered by hurricanes? A new luxury hotel is on the way. The Morgan will debut with 124 rooms and suites, along with a “sand-edge” infinity pool, a state-of-the-art fitness center and a full-service spa. It will also feature a rooftop deck and a prime location straddling Maho and Simpson Bay beaches. It will start taking reservations January 15, 2021 with a scheduled opening of March 1, 2021.
The St. Regis Bermuda Resort is targeting April 2021 as an opening date for its new island property on St. Catherine’s Beach. The resort will feature 30 luxury St. Regis branded residences ranging from 2,279 to 4,693 square feet, in addition to 97 guestrooms and 25 suites. The development will also include the reopening of a Robert Trent Jones designed golf course.
Scheduled to open January 2021, Thompson San Antonio will be a 162-room hotel located in a luxury, mixed-use development on the banks of the San Antonio River and steps from the city's celebrated River Walk. Complete with 28 suites and two penthouses—all with soaking tubs, full wet bars and views of Texas Hill Country—the property will also offer a full-service spa and a 20th floor rooftop bar with panoramic views of downtown. Oversized guest rooms will provide stylish sanctuaries in the heart of San Antonio, while a restaurant from a celebrated local chef will also draw guests and locals alike.
Paradise Valley, an affluent suburb of Phoenix, will finally get its promised luxury property when the Ritz-Carlton opens next summer. The property will span 20 acres of citrus orchards and gardens with the Camelback, Mummy and McDowell mountains as backdrop. In addition to 215 guest units, made up of luxury suites and detached casitas, plans call for an expansive spa, health and fitness center, and an amphitheater. Eateries will emphasize seasonal produce from the resort's herb garden and citrus orchard. The Ritz-Carlton, Paradise Valley, will be the centerpiece of a $2 billion, 122-acre community called the Palmeraie with space for 70 boutique stores and restaurants.

Quick Escape:
New England Ski Areas
“Vermont is open,” said Nate Formalarie from the Vermont Department of Tourism on a zoom call last week with representatives from all the Vermont ski areas. “You just have to adhere to the state guidelines,” Nate adds, which for most of us is either a 14-day self-quarantine before arrival in the state or 7 days of self-quarantine and a negative COVID test. You then have to go online and reserve a lift ticket and possible parking reservation at the ski area you want to visit. Once on mountain, I can think of few places I’d rather be during a pandemic than a ski area. You’re already wearing a mask because it’s cold outside and you’re freely gliding around the mountain outside with few crowds, except down at the base where crowds will be limited. Expect food trucks, fire pits, and much more.

Sugarbush will provide private cabanas at the base which have to be reserved in advance.

Smugglers’ Notch Resort is offering private ski lessons for the entire family.

The classic cross-country skiing retreat, Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, is offering backcountry Nordic tours.

Jay Peak in northern Vermont usually caters to Canadians, but since borders are still closed, the mountain will have far less traffic this year.

Stowe, Okemo, and Mt. Snow are all part of Vail Resorts, which is offering package deals on their Epic Pass like the Northeast Value Pass, which gives you access to 18 ski area in the Northeast and priority reservations.
More details on New Hampshire Mountains...
In New Hampshire, Bretton Woods ski area debuted their new Rosewood Lodge atop the mountain and it’s a beauty, as we reported in the October newsletter. Also be on the lookout for brand new rooms opening at the nearby Omni Mt. Washington Resort, when they unveil their Presidential Wing in mid-winter. Please note that the Omni features many houses and townhomes in the region so if you don't want to stay in the hotel, there are many options we can find for you in rental homes of all sizes. Here's what the New York Times reports concerning New Hampshire's state restrictions: Those traveling to New Hampshire from non-New England states “for an extended period of time” are asked to self-quarantine for two weeks.
More details on Maine Mountains...
In Maine, Saddleback Mountain in Rangeley will be open under new ownership for the first time in over 5 years. It’s a fantastic place to ski without crowds overlooking the vast Rangeley Lake.

At press time, only residents of Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont can enter Maine without restriction. Everyone else must either self-quarantine for 14 days, or sign a document stating that they had a negative result to a PCR or antigen coronavirus test within the previous 72 hours.
Please contact ActiveTravels if you’re interested in visiting any of these ski areas or others we didn't highlight and we’ll suggest the best lodging for you, activities, restaurants and other wintertime activities to enjoy.
The next installment of our Tuesday Travel Dreaming series is coming up, so stay tuned!
