2020 has certainly posed its challenges. With 2021 membership dues renewals opening soon, we want you to know that we work hard to ensure that members receive more value than their dues cost them. Please let us know if budget tightening due to the current pandemic-related climate is making it a challenge to pay your membership dues. We can work something out. We are here for you and are happy to discuss payment structure and additional benefits for your organization. Contact Suzanna Hogendorn, or call the office at (608) 310-7850, with any questions. Virtual Fall Refresh Well-Attended and Well-Received!
WSAE's Fall Refresh event in October featured both education and networking components. Speaker Janet Sperstad, CMP gave an excellent presentation titled Harnessing the Social Brain to Influence Drivers of Decision Making for Virtual and Live Experiences. We learned researched-based strategies to influence behavior and decision making.
Afterward, attendees had the opportunity to check out the interactive Remo platform, allowing for face-to-face networking at tables hosted by different Industry Supporters. We all enjoyed the activities, giveaways and connecting with colleagues.
The feedback we received has been great:
- Janet is fantastic. The Remo platform worked really well for the networking and it was great to see my colleagues!
- Great content in presentation - fit for the times we're in.
- Janet's presentation was awesome!
We extend a special thanks to Tom Graybill with Tri Marq Communications for hosting the event.

Roberts Rules on motions at board meetings
I need some clarification on Roberts Rules of Order regarding who can make a motion at a board meeting. We have some past presidents that are board members for life if they meet an attendance requirement (attend one of the previous two board meetings and six of the last twelve). I have a board member that participated yesterday, including making motions, that had not met that requirement. Join the conversation.

IRS questioned for revoking tax-exempt status of 30K+ groups
A group of House Ways and Means Democrats questioned the IRS this week about why the agency suddenly revoked the tax-exempt status of more than 30,000 nonprofit groups, including 28,000 charities, in their home states. The IRS automatically revokes the exempt status of organizations that do not file a required Form 990 for three consecutive years, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, the IRS extended the filing date this year to July 15. Guidance on revenues from virtual trade shows
Net income received by a tax-exempt organization may be subject to federal corporate income taxation if the income is generated by the performance of an activity that is a trade or business, is regularly carried on, and is not substantially related to the organization’s tax exempt purpose. One area of debate has been whether an organization’s production of a convention or trade show was an activity that was substantially related to the organization’s tax-exempt purpose.
