Latest News About Business Incubators and Accelerators From Across New York State
November 2021 NYS Incubator Report
Taking a look back, October was a great month for BIANYS. We successfully wrapped our first virtual International SoftLandings program and we worked with the Queens Chamber of Commerce and the Queens Tech Council to help them with their strategic planning for the innovation ecosystem for the Borough. Expect to see some great things from them over the next year!

In addition, I am happy to announce AWS Startup Lofts as BIANYS' newest member - and Amazon Corporate as a Gold Sponsor of our Annual Programming!

We appreciate Amazon's recognition of the work we do on behalf of our member incubators and are proud to welcome AWS Startup Lofts as a member. We are grateful for their generous support.
Amazon anticipates its AWS Startup Lofts will be back online soon, providing incubation services to New York City's startup community.

What is a Stage Gate?

A stage gate is a hurdle that founders going through a startup studio must overcome to continue a project. For example, an entrepreneur can only create a company within a studio if they segment the market, identify customers excited to pay for a solution, test and observe an unfair advantage, and accomplish a hundred other tasks.

Stage gates are referred to frequently in the startup studio world, and the stage-gate is a core process for nearly every studioWhy Do Studios Use Stage Gates?
While the specific stage gates and cost per gate may differ from studio to studio, almost all studios have some form of go/no-go process. And, the order of the stage gates may shift from project to project. For example, if a project starts because a customer approaches the studio intending to solve a problem, it reduces risk faster.

The advantage of having multiple clear and defined stage gates in an iterative process is that the team can be objective about success and failure. If you don't define success, then the team fails to understand the overarching goal.
Each task in a stage-gate may result in a "go" or "no-go scenario for a given project. When a team hits a "no-go," the team can start working on another project. Each stage-gate de-risks the project for everyone involved, resulting in a higher chance of success for those that pass the stage gate, and projects receive increased funding and resources as they pass stage gates.
