Meet Benedict's First Hacking Team
In today’s world of connectivity and interaction, Cybersecurity has become as just as an important as a seatbelt is to a driver, Benedict College understands how important it is and created its first-ever Cyber Security Hacking Team (Cyber Tigers) which consists of seven students namely Isaiah Antoine (Team Leader), Brittaney Orr, Joshua Brooks, Tayler Turner, Tianna Alvarez, Zyion Kirkland, and Rodney Jirves. These individuals took part in the first ever hackathon entered by a Benedict student or group within Cybersecurity and came out third in this month’s SANS+HBCU Cyber Tournament which was held virtually.

The Cyber Tigers are dedicated and devoted and have been working very hard over the past month alongside Professor David Moses and Dr. Leon Geter. Every Tuesday and Thursday from 4:00 PM -5:30 PM the Cyber Tigers would meet up and have practice sessions in which they go through the fundamentals of hacking techniques, hands-on approach to various types of computer software and applications such as VMWare, Kali Linux, Nmap, and Wireshark.

Some of these students are majoring in Computer Science, Cyber Security, and even Mass Communication. The Sans +HBCU tournament lasted over two days October 26 and 27, 2021 where the students would get challenging tasks to complete against other HBCU’S to gain scores, some of these tasks require them to go through various Cyber Security applications such as Wireshark, PowerShell, and kali Linux looking for a packet and several other things. The students would also use search engines to help with terms given so that they were able to under the tasks.
The perspective of defense, and the acquisition of knowledge is very relevant today, by introducing Cybersecurity to the Cyber Tigers team, we are offering key tools to operate in every market. The Cyber Tigers represented the school and themselves well placing 3rd as the first-ever hacking team to represent Benedict College. They are the best of BC!!
Social Work Majors Bring in Student Volunteers to
Help Run the Tiger Food Pantry
Pictured above: Teanna Alexander, left; Brooke Henry, right.
In the spring of 2021, two very dedicated social work majors, Brooke Henry and Teanna Alexander, officially opened the Tiger Food Pantry to address food insecurity on campus. The number one way to help food-insecure college students is to create a campus food pantry. Student who may not have the funds to buy healthy snacks for their dorm room when the Café and Food Court are closed can now stock up on Thursday afternoon at the pantry.

A national fall 2020 survey of 1,000 undergraduates found that 52% of students sometimes used off-campus food banks, while 30% used them monthly or more frequently. Thirty-five percent of students said their hunger had impacted their ability to study at some point. The survey was conducted jointly by learning platform Chegg, national nonprofit Swipe Out Hunger, and Born This Way Foundation. They also discovered that more than one-third of students knew someone who had dropped out of school due to difficulties affording food.
The two trailblazers received guidance in creating the pantry from Kymm Hunter, Assistant Vice President for Communication and Marketing, and Dr. John Miller, former Chair of the Social Work Department, who are members of Columbia Food Policy Committee. Dr. Janeen Witty, Vice President for Academic Affairs, assisted the young ladies with space for the new pantry, which is located in the BC Cares area in LRC room 121. Jamila Lyn, Director of Specialized Programs, provided some funding through Project Success and the Columbia Food Policy donated a $500 Publix gift card for fall semester.

At first, Henry and Alexander had a hard time getting students to volunteer to work in the pantry until they teamed up with the Katrina Pitts, Program Manager for the Career Pathways Initiative and Service- Learning Program.  Pitts made it possible for students to receive service-learning hours when worked in the Tiger Pantry.

They now have over 100 students interested in addressing food insecurity on campus.

Listen up! Long tradition of HBCU marching bands
a reason to celebrate
Outside, the drizzle continued to fall, the perfect end to a rainy, dreary Thursday, but inside the walls of the Second Nazareth Baptist Church it was hard not to smile. The BCBOD, which sounds much better when Professor H. Wade Johnson announces it in his booming voice, was rehearsing. The once quiet sanctuary was alive with joyful music and everyone in the room was in on the action.

The BCBOD, short for the Benedict College Band of Distinction, is the school’s roughly 200-member marching band. “We outgrew the program on campus,” Johnson explained before practice began. The band had 83 members just three years ago and its growth meant it had to find a new rehearsal space off campus.
