November 2021 | Volume 13 Issue 11
Happy Wednesday! I don't know how we're in November already. Luckily the weather has been quite mild, which is nice!

Registration for the 9th Native Prairie Restoration/ Reclamation Workshop, February 8-10, 2022 is open! You can find the link below! We're still looking for presentation, case studies and poster abstracts, you can find the Call for Abstracts here. The deadline is November 16th! And there's more information about the Native Prairie Restoration/Reclamation Grant in a link below!

If you missed the Transboundary Grasslands Partnership Workshop last month, the videos are available on Alberta PCF's page!

We had two Speaker Series presentations in October, one in-person in Val Marie, SK by Allie Gallon talking about snakes and one webinar by Dr. Dan Johnson talking about effects of weather and climate on living things. If you missed Dan's presentation, it is available on PCAP's YouTube Channel! And Allie's should be up there soon so keep checking!

We have two Native Prairie Speaker Series webinars coming up in November! Matthew Braun and Tamara Carter from the Nature Conservancy of Canada will be giving us an introduction to the Weston Family Prairie Grassland Initiative on November 17th. You can register here. Dinyar Minocher with the Canadian Prairies Prescribed Fire Exchange will be talking about Presribed Fire and Grasslands on November 30th. You can register here.

Native Prairie Restoration/Reclamation Grant:
For years, instead of offering speaker gifts, SK PCAP has been making a donation on the speakers' behalf to a prairie-focused charity, such as the Alicia Hargrave Memorial Scholarship, who helps train the next generation of rangeland experts. This year we decided to combine the awards and the speaker gift donation, so that the award-winning project would receive a cash prize to put towards their restoration or reclamation project.
You can find the Native Prairie Restoration/Reclamation Grant criteria here! The deadline is January 25th!
PCAP Partner Spotlight
SK Ministry of Environment and SK Ministry of Agriculture
The Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Agriculture have been members of the Prairie Conservation Action Plan (PCAP) executive and PCAP partners since 1998. The ministries collaborate with PCAP to proclaim Native Prairie Appreciation Week each year, recognizing the importance of Saskatchewan's native prairie for our ecology.
The Ministry of Environment's mandate to provide healthy ecosystems for Saskatchewan citizens aligns with PCAP’s mission to promote and conserve Saskatchewan’s native prairie. The ministry protects native prairie for its social, cultural, spiritual and recreational importance through policies on industrial development, wildlife and fisheries management, species and habitats at risk, protected areas, and climate change to ensure the long-term health of prairie ecosystems.
The Ministry of Agriculture helps the industry manage risk and enables a globally competitive, thriving and sustainable agriculture and food sector by supporting farmers, ranchers and agri‑businesses. Policies developed to manage native prairie grasslands help us meet our targets of maintaining total permanent cover at the 2016 level of 19.93 million acres.
In southern Saskatchewan, the majority of critical habitat for species-at-risk is found on native prairie used for cattle grazing and is primarily agricultural Crown land. Through sustainable grazing practices, ranchers ensure a balance between their cattle operations and maintaining habitat for species-at-risk. Saskatchewan’s producers are stewards of the land and our ranching sector plays an important role in conserving and managing rangeland around the province. The two ministries work closely to support sustainable ranching practices that promote the ecological health of the native prairie ecosystem. They collaborate with producers and stakeholders, leveraging federal funding to protect critical habitats and the species that rely on them.
The Saskatchewan Association of Watersheds and member stewardship groups need your help! We are looking for individuals to fill in our short survey about Climate Change. Results from the survey will be used to understand public opinion of climate change and help guide educational material! By filling in the survey, people will be entered to win a $500 gift card! Have your say – fill in the Climate Change Survey today!
