October 13, 2021, Corolla NC - We are thrilled to share Focal Point Coaching & Training ribbon cutting event and our fantastic horse tour with Wild Horse Adventure Tours in Corolla. We had wonderful guides who were well-versed in the history of the horses that had lived in Corolla for 500 years.
A special thank you to Sam Wise of Wild Horse Adventure Tours for giving the Chamber members the opportunity to take this great adventure. If you have never taken this tour, we would recommend everyone to contact Wild Horse Tours and embark on a trip they will never forget. Contact for Wild Horse Adventure Tours: 252-489-2020 or visit www.wildhorsetour.com
When we returned, were excited to conduct a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Stacey Barnes of Focal Point Coaching Training. Stacey also provided a delicious BBQ meal, after which we spent the remainder of evening socializing and networking.
Stacey's company is meant to help leaders and organizations position themselves for long-term success, which we can all agree is crucial for all sizes of businesses that need assistance in becoming more successful and maintaining that success. We are delighted to welcome him to the Chamber; for more information on his program, please contact him at 757-450-8545 or sbarnes@focalpointcoaching.com
Among his other accomplishments is that he is an award-winning BBQ pit master; everyone raved about how delicious his food was.

With the summer heat behind us, many within the business community are only now beginning to get a chance to take a breath and think about the summer season and the current business environment beyond next week. With that opportunity comes the chance to be both self-aware in our own performance and also self-reflective from an organizational standpoint; in practice, Colin Powell once highlighted a strong ability of truly great leaders to be able to build their organizations as seen both from the inside and the outside.
As we think about our organizations moving forward, it’s important to note that our roles as leaders and managers include many roles--one of which is surely “role-model in chief” to our customers, staff, and community partners. While many of us may not like the idea that leaders are under a great deal of scrutiny from both inside and outside our organizations, it’s still a role that we must take seriously as our actions always speak volumes about our priorities.
One of the most powerful leadership tools available to all of us, through our own choice and at very little cost, is the decision to role model behaviors. It’s a great time of year to reflect on how we might be perceived within our organizations and how we’re setting examples to others. No one gets it right all the time--it’s not given to us to be perfect, of course--but the skills of self-awareness combined with the disciple to take action consistently are true tools of long-term success.
Now, for the moment, don’t forget to take some time today to plan a smartphone vacation and take a well-earned break. It’s a powerful example to your team, your customers, and your community partners that people are the first priority.

Extraordinary Nurse Recognized at the Outer Banks Hospital
|
Marcia Bryant, MSN, RN, NE-BC, vice president clinical operations and chief nursing officer of The Outer Banks Hospital, was recently honored with The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's programs to recognize the super-human work nurses perform every day.
|
|
|
Bryant received The Daisy Nurse Leader award for the initiative she led to establish The Outer Banks Hospital as the first dementia-friendly hospital in North Carolina on April 26, 2018. By fostering the relationship between the hospital and the Health Carolinians Dementia Task Force, Bryant developed a joint community and hospital team to support innovative changes that created the dementia-friendly designation. Through the partnership, the Outer Banks then became the first dementia-friendly community in the state. Out of that work, the “Purple Seahorse” symbol was created and has become an identifying seal for businesses that undergo dementia-friendly training. Since that time, Bryant has supported additional healthcare systems both nationally and internationally to foster dementia-friendly environments.
“One of the best things I’ve ever done in my career was to get Marcia Bryant on board here,” said Ronnie Sloan, FACHE, president The Outer Banks Hospital. We are so very fortunate to have Marcia as part of the leadership team and grateful for her innovative mind-set and tireless pursuit of excellence.”
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, California, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, a little-known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

Emerald Advance will start in the Elizabeth City Office on November 15th. You will need your most recent pay stub and a picture ID to apply. If a married couple would both like to apply for Emerald Advance, then both would need to apply with valid picture ID and their most recent pay stub. For those clients that their only income is from self employment, you will need a copy of last years return and a current Profit and Lost statement to date to apply.
|
|
|
Note: Driving license must be valid as the guidelines have change where the paper copy of your renewal license will not be accepted. You will need a different type of valid pictured ID.
Moyock's H&R Block Office opening day will be Monday January 3, 2022. This year with the protection of masks, shields on our desk, and those that have all the vaccine shots, we will be doing face to face in our office this year. All of your favorite tax prepares will be returning this year. We look forward to seeing everyone at the desk like we did two years ago. One more step to normal.
Those that enjoyed the Digital drop off last year, we are continuing this option. As well as drop off and pick up in the office like last year.
If you prefer to do everything online, you can do that by creating a MyBlock account, upload your documents, making a digital appointment. When we receive that appointment, we will acknowledge your request, complete your return and uploaded to be Approved Online. This year all of the required security paper work that would normally be completed in the office will be available in the MyBlock account.
H&R Block now has the same MyBlock account as an app for your smart phone. You can download the app from either Apple's App Store or Android's Google Play. The procedures are the basically the same. The set up for both on line and the phone App are menu driven.
As of now we are unsure on IRS's opening day. We are hopping that with no unexpected directions for IRS, that they will open in mid to late January like two years ago.
So make a list as to your needed forms(using last years return as a guideline). Gather them up in one location as they come in. You'll be ready when your checklist is done. Guidelines on forms received dates – W-2's and 1099's should me sent out by January 31st, and received the first week of February. Clients that are expecting a K1 from a partnership or from a S-corp, these are due to be mailed by the 15th of March, you should received them by the 21st of March. For those that use the Government's Health Care, the 1095-A's should be out by 15th of February. If you can login now to make an account, request a paperless correspondence. Your form should be sent to your email address, you'll received it faster this way. For all the Naval retires, our 1099R should be available around the 16th of December with our 1095-B out in January.
For Clients with health care through employers, you will received either a 1095-B or 1095-C. As with previous years these were not forth coming with any kind of regularity. As long as your W-2 has a “DD” in Block 12, we know you had employers insurance. A 1095-B or 1095-C would be nice to have in case IRS would like some extra information.

Greetings to Sharon UMC (Poplar Branch) from Pastor Susan Lindblade
|
Hello Sharon Church Family, my name is Susan Lindblade and I am your newly appointed Interim Pastor. My appointment is rather unique in that it will be my privilege to serve your congregation twice as Pastor in Charge, first from 1983-1986 and
|
|
|
now. I remember those days 38 years ago at Sharon with great affection and consider you to be the congregation who taught me how to be a good pastor. During my tenure, we built your Methodist parsonage in Aydlett and I have always been astounded in the way this congregation came together in a common cause to build this home, which was a final hurdle in establishing your place as a station church.
My husband, Eric, is also a retired United Methodist pastor. We have been married 42 years and have one son, Eric A. Lindblade, who was born a few months prior to my appointment at Sharon. Thirty-eight years later, he is now a Civil War historian, author, Co-host of The Battle of Gettysburg Podcast, ranked in the Top 100 History podcasts in the US with a following of listeners in over 70 nations around the world, and Federal Licensed Battlefield Guide at the Gettysburg National Military Park. He resides in Gettysburg with his faithful canine sidekick, Harper, and felines named for the Parks and Recreation TV show characters, Duke Silver and April Ludgate. On Valentine’s Day, he became engaged to Renee Steinberg, who is a branch manager for Adams County National Bank and lives in Frederick, Maryland.
I worked for four decades as a United Methodist pastor at First Church: Elizabeth City, Sharon, Hamlet, First Church: Rockingham, St. Matthew’s, Fayetteville, St. James, Newport, and North Raleigh UMC. All that time, with the exception of 3 years I took when I was on Leave of Absence to be at home with Eric A., I was in the faith and people business. When we retired in 2017 from North Raleigh UMC, we left the fourth largest church in this conference, 2200 members, 4 worship services, long hours, too frequent meetings, a constant workload, demands and expectations. So, it was refreshing to be able to enjoy home, travel, each other, and our family. It wasn’t long before Eric was called to serve two small churches in Goldsboro for 3 years. I was happy for him, but I wasn’t ready to do it myself. I would rise every morning as I always had, but to do what? At the end of two years, I decided to work part time as a Dealer Trade Driver for the Capital Automotive Group, Chevy and Ford, in Raleigh. Fun work, delightful people to work with, but the something vital that was missing was a sense of purpose. My hyperactive life of four decades was all too leisurely. There are only so many times you can clean your closets, folks!!!!
You know the Farmers Insurance commercial when JK Simmons says in deadpan fashion, “We know a thing or two because we’ve seen a thing or two.” Well, this entered my mind when your District Superintendent, David Blackman asked if I would be willing to help Sharon Church out on an interim basis. It occurred to me that I had retired from one job, but I still carry everything I learned in those four decades, every experience, every insight, and every ounce of wisdom. And all that equips me with an opportunity to be retired for that which is yet to come. And for the first time in a long time, I feel like the old Susan is back!!!
Sharon Church Family, Eric and I look forward to moving to your community on November 1st to begin this Interim ministry with you. Like the old Maxine Nightingale song of the 80's, “I’m going right back to where I started from.” God bless you and I look forward to getting to know this congregation again and to seeing how God will work through all of us to bring his Kingdom into closer view!! See you soon!!

Currituck Education Foundation Awards Mini Grants
|
On October 20th at a virtual meeting of the Currituck Education Foundation, four projects supporting Currituck County Schools were awarded mini-grant funding.
|
|
|
Danna Pierro of Central Elementary School received a grant for “Light Filters For Concentration.” Proper lighting is not only essential for student performance, it is also an environmental factor that affects teacher performance as well. This will reduce eyestrain and diffuse the harsh glare of fluorescent lighting. It will create a calming and pleasant learning atmosphere.
Roberta Matkins of Knotts Island Elementary School was awarded a grant for “Exceptional Children Classroom Book Replenishment Project.” The funds will be used to replace outdated books. New books purchased will be of high interest/low readability. High interest/low readability books are more attractive and age appropriate/more relatable in terms of format and plot. These books can be very motivating for reluctant readers.
Lacy Iacano of Shawboro Elementary School was awarded a grant for “Hands-On Science in the Classroom.” Funds will be utilized to purchase updated/new science materials that have broken, expired or are nonfunctional. This mini-grant was sponsored by Jim Hartmann/Rescom Property Services of NC, Inc.
Dana Newbern of Jarvisburg Elementary School was awarded a grant for the “Garden” project. The funds would be to replace the existing garden bed structures/frames that have rotted with a metal one, then add new soil and plants. The garden beds would be maintained by the students so they can build an understanding of how plants survive in their environments. The garden beds can be seen from the front entrance to the building and will add to the appearance of our grounds and the whole school will enjoy looking at and observing the gardens. This mini-grant was sponsored by Sharon United Methodist Women (Poplar Branch).
The Currituck Education Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization that exists to support public education in Currituck County. For more information on how to be involved or to make a donation, please visit CurrituckEducationFoundation.org.

5 Tips for Maximizing the Use of Space
|
There is more that goes into a productive workspace than just a desk and chair. With corporate office spaces shrinking and employee numbers increasing, maximizing the use of space is imperative to productivity. From cord management and lighting to storage solutions and to sit-to-stand workstations - with today's workplace tools and accessories, everything can be within arm’s reach and at the lift of a finger. Workplace is here with tips to help you maximize your workspace.
|
|
|
1. Stow Not Store
As the shift towards digital documentation becomes more prevalent, we no longer need to take up precious space with large file storage. New age storage should address the need to stow, rather than store, in a compact, space-efficient design. Let Workplace help you customize your workspace with a variety of pedestals, undermounts, and caddies that optimize efficiency without compromising the compressed work area.
2. Incorporate Power Access & Wire Management
More technology demands also increase the need for access to power. Power and data modules provide power at the desktop with pop-up or surface-mounted options, allowing for more efficient use of space while keeping surfaces free of cords with devices close at hand.
3. Install Monitor Arms
Reduce desktop clutter and reclaim valuable workspace otherwise taken up with bulky technology. Monitor arms allow monitors to be placed at the proper position for improved ergonomics and well-being, while freeing up desk space.
4. Add a Desktop Riser
Can’t find the space to add a height-adjustable desk to your workspace? Incorporate a sit-to-stand desktop riser. Desktop risers are height-adjustable workstations that seamlessly transforms any fixed-height desk into an active one – giving you all the benefits of a height adjustable desk to your already existing workspace.
5. Install a Keyboard Tray
Find yourself frequently running out of desk space? Consider installing an under-desk keyboard tray. A well-designed keyboard not only frees up desk space, but it also offers protection from carpal tunnel syndrome, neck and back pain, and other musculoskeletal issues by bringing the keyboard and mouse to the user in an ergonomic position.

Affordable Care Health Insurance sees positive changes in 2022, new agent deemed “Champion” for uninsured
|
CONTRIBUTED BY IN’SHORE’ANCE AGENCY
Consumers were greeted with lots of changes in the Health Insurance Marketplace on November 1, when open enrollment for 2022 ushered in. New this year, there are more carriers to choose from, enhanced telehealth options and generous financial incentives. In addition, open enrollment is extended to January 15, 2022, giving consumers more time to shop for an affordable health insurance policy.
|
|
|
On top of all this, a new agent, and twice-designated Marketplace Champion, is available to help.
A new law, the American Rescue Plan (ARP) was passed in March 2021 and provides extra tax credits towards health insurance. This significantly lowers people’s monthly payments. Actually, 4 out of 5 people were able to enroll in plans that cost around $10 month. Many people found policies that cost them nothing (after tax credit)
Dispelling misconceptions, Affordable Care plans aren’t second-rate government hand-outs. They are earned tax credits that allow consumers to buy quality, comprehensive health plans offered by major carriers – plans that retail for more than $700 per month. Plans that And they are required to offer doctor visits, emergency care, preventive care, hospital care, and prescription drugs, as well as essential health benefits like chronic disease management, rehabilitation, mental health services & substance use cessation – to name a few.
Also new this year are the carriers servicing Northeast NC. From two carriers last year, (Blue Cross Blue Shield NC and Cigna Health), consumers now have more options for coverage with Friday Health, Aetna CVS and WellCare of North Carolina. All five carriers offer competitive pricing and benefits, and they are now accepted locally.
Further reflecting changes in the health insurance marketplace, telehealth visits are a popular new benefit in 2022 plans. Free mental health services and one-minute clinic visits are a few services that consumers will be able to access from their tablets or computers, made possible by major medical insurance.
This is especially helpful in rural areas.
According to the NC Office of Rural Health, roughly 12 percent of North Carolinians are uninsured. Coupled with long drives to access medical services, lack of public transportation and limited technology access, that percentage is likely higher in rural communities. It’s certainly felt more in a small town.
Rural is part of Currituck’s charm and new proprietress and In’Shore’ance Agent Megan Spencer Shaw understands that. Hailing from rural Hyde County, Shaw’s office is in Point Harbor, where she specializes in Affordable Care health insurance, especially for the underserved communities. She was recognized in 2020 for her track record of helping the uninsured, earning her a spot in the Circle of Champions with the Health Insurance Marketplace. She was recognized again, twice, earlier this year for helping uninsured during the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency and Special Enrollment Period.
Because of her commitment and support to clients during this critical time, she was awarded the 2021 “Connecting Consumers with Coverage Award,” which earned her designation as a “Champion for Coverage” from the Centers for Medicare Services.
“Through your commitment you are making an impact in your community by helping uninsured and underserved Americans access health insurance coverage,” states the designation. Shaw said that she’s especially honored to help small-town-folks, like herself, get access to healthcare.
Premier changes in the 2022 marketplace include more carrier options, different access trends and generous tax breaks. And, folks in the northeast also have a local “Champion” to assist in 2022 enrollment. Shaw’s In’Shore’ance office is located in the Magnolia, Suite 1, at the Harbinger Center, 8845 Caratoke Hwy. in Point Harbor. You're invited to join EDPNC and Currituck County Economic Development for a free event discussing international trade opportunities and other services available for NC manufacturers.
During this event, our international trade team will discuss ways they work to support companies that are interested in exporting and discuss ways our international offices may be able to support NC manufacturers interested in sourcing new supply chain vendors within their markets. Additionally, they will touch on in-house grant programs that help companies who are currently exporting or are interested in learning more about ways to get involved. Our business support team will also be present to discuss how they support the industry.
Please feel free to pass this along to colleagues or friends in the area—we are very excited to share how we can support your efforts!
