Ramping Up For The Holidays
|
|
As the holidays approach, we all get busy with special events and family gatherings. The same is true at Assistance League of Hawaii. Our Thrift Shop switches into high gear, beginning with the Christmas Work Party on November 5th-6th. Many of you, our Assistance League family, will be helping with that extraordinary effort. Our extended family, in the form of many student volunteers from Farrington High School, will be offering their time on that weekend too. Our shop will be decorated for the holidays with massive amounts of holiday merchandise, ready to be sold on Tuesday, November 8th. (Be sure to talk that up with your friends and relatives.)
We continue to brighten the lives of those in our community through our programs. There will be an opportunity to assist with packing Operation School Bell’s Kokua Clothing Boxes on November 11, and then delivering those necessary clothing items to schools throughout Oahu. (See the details in the Philanthropic Programs article below.) The Operation Wildlife family invites members to observe their endangered species and conservation program in action, and hopefully join their ranks. There are opportunities to help with the We Care and Share programs as well. As we like to say, “There are many ways to contribute.” There is no better way to show your holiday spirit than by giving of your time and talents to help those in need.
We hope you can join us for our November Membership Meeting / Luncheon at the Old Spaghetti Factory on Wednesday, November 9th, where our Assistance League of Hawaii family will share our many stories of accomplishment and enjoy each other’s company during our feast. (See details in the Hospitality article below.)
Mahalo for all that you do.

Booming Sales For October
|
|
Thanks to all of the volunteers who came to the Thrift Shop on a Sunday, October 16 to help with our successful Art Sale.
|
|
Wow!! Great sales for the month of October! The monthly total was $28,296. The Art Sale on Sunday, October 16 was a big success and a lot of work. We continued to hang the remaining pieces and most of the art has sold. Thanks to Ku’ulei Pai who had a vision in her head about the event and to the many members who helped set up, wrap, and work on Sunday. The Halloween and Thanksgiving merchandise was put out and almost all of those items sold.
Arden has been working on the “Sterling Silver Jewelry Sale” for over a year. The sale took place on Saturday, October 29. Eager customers arrived early, forming a long line outside, and they lined up 3-deep by the jewelry counters. It was a crazy but very worth- while Saturday morning. Total sales for Saturday, Oct. 29 were $5,250, of which the jewelry sale accounted for $2,472 of the total. Thank you Arden !!
We were offered a large donation of excellent furniture from the “Gold Coast” thanks to the efforts of one of our realtor members, Lynn Plantz. Many of the smaller pieces sold on Saturday, Oct. 29, and we expect more arrivals, so come and check it out. This particular donation involved a lot of effort and planning on our part but the Thrift Shop Committee felt the effort and cost of delivery was certainly worth it.

November promises to be just as busy. You should have received an invitation to join the annual “Christmas Work Party” on Saturday, Nov. 5 and Sunday, Nov. 6. Just think of the fun you will have unpacking, sorting, organizing and pricing over 100 bins and boxes that have resided on our shelves this past year. As in the past, we will have several students present to carry and move bins and there will be a pot- luck lunch on Sunday. To make room for our Christmas displays we will have a sale on housewares the first week in November.
Thanks to all for your continued support

Philanthropic Programs Are Going Strong,
Volunteer Opportunities Available
|
|
Our Philanthropic programs are going strong and continue to provide a variety of services in our community. Volunteers are always needed and appreciated, so we encourage new volunteers to sign up for a program that appeals to them. We are heading into the season of caring, sharing and giving; let's all find ways to show
our gratitude by helping Hawaii's keiki and families.
Here are some of our upcoming activities and recent events:
Operation School Bell:
Kokua Clothing Boxes - Save the date - Friday, November 11th from 9:00-12:00. Our morning will be spent filling bags and boxes with new shirts, shorts, underwear and slippers. Please think about adopting one or two of our Oahu schools for drop-offs and timely office check-ins for refills during the year.
Operation Wildlife:
We have currently booked 14 schools for OWL presentations on Oahu this year and will be traveling to Hilo and Maui in January and February of 2023. The first school we visited was Pu'uhale, and the children and teachers were very receptive and excited about the whole experience! Several volunteers came to check it out and plan to return for more school visits. Yay!
We are still hoping to engage more volunteers to help with this program. If you are interested, we have schools in town, Hawaii Kai, Pearl City, Wahiawa, Mililani, Kalihi, Waianae and Kailua, all coming up. Contact Hazel Sumile at hazelsumile@gmail.com to inquire about possibly coming to observe a session to see if you might be interested. And MANY MANY THANKS TO ALL THOSE WHO ARE ALREADY HELPING WITH THIS PROGRAM. You are so appreciated!!
Share:
Our volunteers, Karen and Marty Kehoe, have been busy! Program activities include:
-One delivery of goods to Helping Hands Hawaii
-One delivery of prescription glasses and sunglasses to Lions
Club
-Four deliveries to Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii, Waianae Chapter
-Three deliveries to Kokua Kalihi Valley Comprehensive Family
Services
1,217 keiki were served.
We Care:
Linda McColgan purchased and delivered paper towels, sani wipes, hand sanitizer, printer paper and kids' snacks to the Domestic Violence Action Center. This gift is valued at approximately $300
Mary Monohon packed and delivered 60 Malama Bears and 60 Lullaby Layettes to Aloha Air Cargo to be shipped to Kona Community Hospital.
