As I write this article on Oct. 25th, I just realized we only have two months until Christmas! It’s hard to believe we are in the season of wonderful Holidays. One important holiday is happening this month – Thanksgiving! I love this holiday because it has always been a great time to be with family and sit around the dinner table eating my favorite meal which is turkey and dressing! The only downside to eating a great meal at Thanksgiving is that I am always full and ready for a nap after I eat! Can I get an Amen! But spending time with family and eating a great meal is only just a small part of this holiday. Thanksgiving reminds us that we are to be thankful not only on one special day, but every day that we live. As Christians, every day should be thanksgiving and it is something we are commanded to do!

Psalm 118:1 tells us, “Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! His mercy endures forever.” When we read this verse, we automatically think that this sounds like a great verse but giving thanks can be difficult. It is very easy to say, “Thank you, Jesus”, especially when things are going great in our lives. We can all think of things that have happened in our lives in which we are thankful, but are we thankful when a loved one has passed away or when we experienced a tragedy? This verse doesn’t say give thanks when you are “feeling” good, but to give Him thanks because He is good.

There is one man in the Bible that comes to mind when I think of someone who experienced loss and had to deal with great tragedy - Job. When we look at Job’s situation in the Bible, we would say that he experienced things that would have caused him to throw in the towel and give up. He could have easily cursed God and walked around depressed. In one single day, he lost his seven sons and three daughters! And yet, he chose to continue to give thanks to the Lord. He was a man that was grateful regardless of the bad circumstances that came into his life. In fact, Job states in Chapter 1:21, “Naked I came into my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” We must ask ourselves when we have difficult circumstances, can we say what Job said? Can we be grateful regardless of our circumstances. Friends, this is what the Lord desires of us. To truly give thanks we must realize that God is always in control of our lives. He is in control of all the good things that come into our lives as well as the bad things. We must always maintain an eternal perspective. I have found when I do this in my personal life that I can live out a life of gratitude and give thanks to the Lord everyday because His mercy indeed endures forever! May we live with an attitude of gratitude each day God allows us to live here on this earth!

May God richly bless your family during this Thanksgiving season!
