PRESS CONFERENCE


On Tuesday, November 7th at 9:30 AM, The SOL Project will host a press conference with tobacco prevention partners and advocates to educate the public on the progress we have made within tobacco prevention, why tobacco is still an issue, and the shift towards the tobacco endgame.

Sacramento City Council Tobacco Prevention Champion Vice Mayor Eric Guerra is also scheduled to speak about why he supports best practices in tobacco prevention and why his colleagues should consider protecting the health and well-being of vulnerable populations, youth and all residents by shifting towards tobacco endgame strategies.

Outdoor Air Opinion Survey

What do you think about smoking in outdoor public areas? Outdoor public areas include parks, sidewalks, bike or walking paths, outdoor dining spaces and other recreational areas. The SOL Project is asking the public’s opinion on smoking in outdoor public areas to let elected officials know what the community wants. “Smoking” includes items like cigarettes, little cigars, cigarillos, marijuana, and vaping devices. Bill Strengthening Enforcement of Flavored Tobacco Ban Signed into Law

The governor has signed AB 935, Assemblymember Connolly’s bill creating greater enforcement of the ban on flavored tobacco. Read more

California Attorney General Rob Bonta today announced the recipients of the California Department of Justice (DOJ)’s Fiscal Year 2023-2024 Proposition 56 Tobacco Grant Program. The grant recipients are 37 local government agencies located throughout the state that will receive a total of more than $21 million to support their efforts to reduce illegal tobacco sales. NATIONAL NEWS

In a letter to President Biden, 311 faith leaders from across the country expressed strong support for the FDA’s rules to prohibit the manufacture and sale of menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars. Most of the faith leaders serve Black communities. The letter calls FDA action to reduce tobacco use “a moral imperative,” emphasizing that tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States and claims the lives of nearly half a million Americans every year. FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

The Call for 2024 Pilot Project Applications is open. The California Collaborative Consortium on Thirdhand Smoke is pleased to announce the call for the 2024 Pilot Research Grant applications. The Pilot Research Awards aim to expand and promote the THS research priorities in relation to the Consortium’s central theme. This short-term funding support for pilot studies should inform the development of larger, peer-reviewed THS-focused research applications that can compete successfully for TRDRP or other funding.
