Strategies to be a good supervisor.
We’re looking back at the great thoughts shared by members of the APWA Leadership and Management Committee and Knowledge Team in their Successful Supervision series this year and wanted to bring it all together and share some culminating ideas, specifically about the importance of empathy, inquiry, and honesty in leadership. We hope this information will give you “food for thought” and support new and experienced supervisors on their journey to confident leadership.
A key aspect of successful supervision is understanding that the development of a public works team starts immediately after a new hire is selected. These early times on the job are critical. In today’s very competitive job market, supervisors must be prepared with the tools and resources to reinforce the new hire’s decision to join your organization. It can be easy to get caught up in policies, forms, and procedures in those early days. An effective onboarding plan includes purposeful efforts to build engagement, culture, and connection with the new hire and the team; this includes the practice of empathy and inquiry, tools of your leadership practice that start from day one.
This fall we have welcomed our 9th TLP Cohort and Cohort 7 participants officially completed the program; presenting their capstone project and attending their 6th and final module!
On October 5th, members of Cohort 7 presented the outcomes of their final Capstone Project. On October 31st, they wrapped up their final required module learning about succession planning, workforce development, and tools available to them to help them create action plans for communicating more effectively. Congratulations, Cohort 7, all your hard work paid off!
On November 9th, we kicked off our 9th Cohort, which is our largest Cohort to date! It was a jam-packed day. Participants spent the morning with Celeste Barros learning about their individual DiSC (personality) style. After lunch, the group got to hear from Tom Modzelewski, a Cohort 7 member. Tom shared his TLP experience and gave some words of advice to the incoming Cohort. The afternoon was dedicated to group activities and team building. We are so excited to begin this Cohort's leadership journey. Welcome Cohort 9!

I would recommend this book to my colleagues. Learning about the author's journey to Disney is a great example of how people grow and evolve in all facets of life. In addition to his personal journey, this book provides a great foundation for anyone at any point in their career; whether you are just building a foundation or looking to reevaluate and evolve in your current position. His outlook is a universal and eye-opening approach that can be applied to today’s workforce.
