Uncovering the Mystery:

Forensic Science in the Classroom

Forensic science is a fascinating field of study that has gained popularity recently because of its portrayal in popular culture. There are many benefits to introducing forensic science classes including providing students with critical thinking skills, potential career opportunities and teaching students ethical behavior. The content is interesting and engaging and provides great opportunities for hands-on learning.

Forensic science requires analyzing evidence and drawing conclusions based on the data collected. This process involves a lot of critical thinking and problem-solving, which can be helpful in other areas of academics and life. The classes introduce students to a potential career path. With the increasing demand for forensic scientists, there are many job opportunities in this field. Forensic science also involves following strict protocols to avoid contaminating evidence, and students can learn the value of honesty and integrity through these classes.

Our schools believe it important to provide learning opportunities to our students that are highly engaging, provide many benefits and prepare them for their future endeavors. See what our forensic science classes are doing below.

The forensic science course at Hope of Detroit Academy High School (HoDA HS), led by Mr. Jacob Teelander, has engaged the students with topics like

death and decay, autopsy, processing crime scenes and blood analysis. Students also learn the detailed tasks of reading, identifying and matching fingerprints. One of the topics the class has been covering includes decaying and how different elements contribute to the speeding up or slowing down of the process. Mr. Teelander is facilitating an experiment utilizing the outdoor classroom to demonstrate the effects the environment has on the decomposition process. On a regular basis, he takes his classes outside to document how much, if any, decomposition has occurred in four different scenarios.

In addition, Mr. Teelander is also looking into having the staff join him in creating a crime scene activity with the students. The students will ask teachers and staff, about the crime, lifting fingerprints, and determining what truly happened; it is Clue in real life!

The students are really enjoying their science experience this year and Hope of Detroit Academy is grateful to have a teacher who works so diligently to engage his students with interactive teaching and learning.

César Chávez Academy High School (CCAHS) is excited to offer Forensic Science as a new elective this year, based on student survey results from last spring. The survey polled rising 10th-12th graders on which areas of study they would be most interested in learning about. Forensic Science was by and large the top choice! So far this semester, students were introduced to the study of Forensic Science in their first unit, and have begun to learn about the forensic evidence of hair, DNA, fingerprints, blood and ballistics. Students will wrap up the semester learning about Death and the Human body, studying concepts like toxicology, autopsy, and forensic entomology. CCAHS is excited to see how students react to the new forensics opportunity and are happy to provide student-selected coursework.

MLK Grant Opportunity

To honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., the Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) is offering MLK National Day of Service grants to support volunteer projects that respond to community needs such as food insecurity, recent disasters, and activities that promote Equity and Social Justice. Eligible organizations include nonprofit and faith organizations, municipalities, schools and universities.

Funding is based on the quality of the project to meet community needs and for the project to create significant volunteer involvement with a special emphasis on youth engagement at all levels of the activity from planning, coordinating and implementing. There is not a match requirement, but additional sponsors are encouraged. Additionally, reviewers will evaluate applications based on use of partnerships and equitable geographic representation.

Grant awards are available as follows:

$1000 grant to engage 101 volunteers or more

$750 grant to engage 76 to 100 volunteers

$500 grant to engage 50 to 75 volunteers

$250 grant to engage 26 to 50 volunteers

$100 grant to engage up to 25 volunteers

Steps to take in designing your project:

Create Project Plan. Develop a plan to address a community need. Projects will focus on one or more of the following areas: disaster services, economic opportunity, environmental stewardship, education, healthy futures, racial equality, diversity, equity and inclusion, veterans and military families and other community needs.

Design Project Budget:

Develop a list of all supplies needed and the costs. Grants are not awarded for staff salary, items volunteers can bring from home (markers, crayons, rakes, etc.,) expensive equipment, gift cards, volunteer meals and there should be an explanation as to how reusable items (i.e., yard equipment) will be stored and available for future service. Funds are reimbursed after the event when proof of expenses and project results are submitted. Awarded organizations must register as a vendor of the state to receive payment.

Timelines:

Complete grant applications should be received by December 13, 2023. Projects should be held between January 5 and January 22, 2024. MCSC Staff may need further clarification on projects and applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Please Note:

Similar grant opportunities are available in Ohio and Indiana with earlier deadlines. There are multiple National Days of Service funding opportunities throughout the year for all three states. If you have questions or would like to learn more, please reach out to the academics team.

Teacher Hall of Fame

We are entering our eighth Teacher Hall of Fame Induction for the 2023-2024 school year, which allows The Leona Group to recognize all of the exceptional things teachers are doing in our schools. Without teachers who continue to strive for excellence, we would not be able to carry out our company's mission to provide a quality education for students and families.

School leaders, assistant leaders and instructional coaches are asked to submit nominations for monthly teacher hall of fame candidates for the 2023-2024 school year. We will have a Primary Teacher Category for grades K-5 and a Secondary Teacher Category for grades 6-12. These nominations are based on school leaders' observations in their locations. It is up to them to honor a teacher that they feel embodies the spirit of their school's mission. Once the nomination is sent electronically to The Leona Group Department of Academic Achievement, the team reviews the nominees and bases their decision on who best embodies the spirit of The Leona Group and academic success.
