Two School of Education-led research projects

aim to enhance climate science learning

Led by Professor Rossella Santagata, the National Science Foundation-funded projects partner with students, educators and local communities to create inclusive, equity-centered curriculum for high school students.

First statewide family engagement center to be established through $5 million grant


As part of the U.S. Department of Education award, Dean Frances Contreras serves as the principal investigator to conduct an external evaluation of the center's work, while helping the state adopt effective strategies to engage families in the educational process of their children.

Emily Penner and Andrew Penner, professor of sociology, discuss the publication Schooled and Sorted: How Educational Categories Create Inequality, which investigates the challenges and opportunities presented by educational categorizations while offering examples of more inclusive categories.

Q&A with new faculty: Symone Gyles


The assistant professor, who joined the faculty on July 1, conducts research that strives to reimagine K-12 science education as a space that engages students’ home, community and cultural knowledge, experiences and values as assets in learning, while positioning students as change agents in their communities.

Merging academic, cultural identities at UCI


Isabella Seccia '23 credits her experience as a research assistant in the School of Education's STEM Learning Lab with her interest in culturally informed design. She started the Ph.D. in Education program this fall and hopes to guide other non-traditional students with a self-produced vlog.

'Bien Educado' distinguished lecture

UCI Professor Gustavo Carlo's Hispanic Heritage Month Distinguished Lecture on Prosocial Behavior

On Oct. 11, Professor Gustavo Carlo gave a distinguished lecture, titled Bien Educado: Raising Latine Children to Thrive, based on his ongoing research on prosocial behavior in Latine children during National Hispanic Heritage Month. The presentation was followed by a Q&A discussion moderated by Assistant Professor Adriana Villavicencio.
