Are You Ready For Winter?

The holidays are fast approaching, and so is the winter season

- which means a lot of RAIN!

We've been working hard to prepare for the rainy winter season, just as you would prepare your own home. Clearing weeds, seeding for erosion control, unblocking drainage access, inspecting pipes, and so much more - these are the necessary tasks that our Operations team must perform at all of our sites, including closed landfills that our agency owns (like Crazy Horse Landfill).

Protective measures such as these are put in place to meet regulatory standards which are meant to protect human and environmental health. As such, this is part of our duty to provide you with secure long-term solid waste disposal in an environmentally-sound manner.

Here's Three Tips for a Sustainable Thanksgiving!

1. AVOID FOOD WASTE

Coordinate with guests on who is bringing what, and prepare enough food based on the amount of people that will be eating. Also, avoid "eating with your eyes", so you aren't left with leftovers on your plate that need to be tossed!

2. SEPARATE FOOD SCRAPS

Let guests know that they should separate their food scraps into a kitchen pail to be tossed into the green cart for composting! That way, no food ends up in our landfill.

3. BEWARE BLACK FRIDAY

This tradition of consumerism is a huge contributor to the landfill. Ask yourself if you really need that "stuff" before giving in to the good deals. Consider purchasing an experience as a gift for others or a handmade item, instead!

Haunted Backroads, or Illegal Dumpsites?

Whether you believe ghosts exist in the most isolated parts of our county or not, the illegal dumping there is certainly real. Everyone suffers the consequences of illegal dumping.

Check out our latest Public Service Announcement against illegal dumping, featuring Monterey County Supervisor Chris Lopez & California Highway Patrol Officer Ryan Moore!

Big Items? No Big Deal!

DON'T DUMP! If you, or someone you know, need to dispose of large items that don't fit into the curbside carts, your waste hauler can help with that! In the Salinas Valley, your waste hauler is either WM (formerly Waste Management), Tri-Cities Disposal & Recycling, or Republic Services of Salinas. Give them a call and schedule your bulky item pickup! Most of these services are offered for FREE. Learn more about your eligibility for a free additional pickup by clicking the link below.

COMPOST YOUR PUMPKINS

If your jack-o-lantern is beginning to lose its spooky, toss it (literally if you'd like) into your green cart! We'll handle it from there, and create nutrient-rich compost from it that will go right back into the communities we serve. The pumkpin must be unpainted and free from other contaminants, like candles and lights.
