North Carolina Women – Celebrating 70 years!

November 2023

From the desk of Kay Wildt, NCFRW President

Urgent prayer request

The husband of one of our members is a reservist in the Israeli military and was activated into service. Please keep this young couple in your prayers. And pray for all those affected by war. For security, the names are private.

Happy Thanksgiving

At our Fall Board meeting in Winston-Salem, Congressman Dan Bishop spoke about current events in Congress. Clare Lopez, Middle East expert, explained the role that history and religion play in that region and gave insights for its resolution.

Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson inspired us at our Prayer Breakfast and recounted the importance of women leaders throughout the ages from ancient Britain to today.

NC Treasurer Dale Folwell brought good news about the health of NC's economy and NC's "AAA" credit rating due to reduced state debt and his cost-saving measures. Treasurer Folwell installed our elected officers for their two-year terms.

Congratulations to the new Executive Committee of the NCFRW: President Kay Wildt; Mountain Region VP Toni Wall; Foothills Region VP Erica Vedeikis, Central Region VP Gay Dillard, Capital Region VP Jackie Weyhenmeyer; Coastal Region Stephanie Broughton; Treasurer Pam Keller; Assistant Treasurer Ann James; Secretary Sarah Wetherby; Assistant Secretary Michele Nix.

We were honored that Jo Bishop, Yolanda Hill and Synthia Folwell attended with their husbands.

Thank you A.J. Daoud for your gift of beautiful pink roses for each of our members, a tradition for more than 15 years to show his appreciation for all that we do.

Reflection by Margeaux Holland

"Jesus replied: 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' Matthew 22: 37-38

"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." II Timothy 1:7

These two verses are the most important for the next two years as we serve our homes, communities, state and nation. Seek Him with all your heart, soul and mind, and He will give you power, love and a sound mind - for your good and for serving so many around you.

His wisdom and love are best, and He wants the best for you...

There will be a reception on Friday evening, the annual Dottie Martin Scholarship luncheon on Saturday and a special dinner Saturday evening.

The rates we've negotiated are a great savings. Do not delay booking your room because the regular rates are already more expensive and will continue to climb the closer we are to the actual date.

NC Honor Flight

I had the unique opportunity to attend the Triad Honor Flight Welcome Home Party! There, with two special guests - my husband, Dallas, and Representative Jeff Zenger, my boss - who were Guardians that day to Veterans. Triad Honor Flight is grateful for the sacrifices of our veterans, and they honor veterans by hosting one last mission - a creative and exciting, memorable, and fun-filled day in D.C.

There are two groups in NC that bring Veterans to the National WWII Memorial and to memorials of wars they fought in. Each veteran's day is complete with flight, bus, meals, planning, narrated tours and lots of cheers and well-deserved recognition.

I highly recommend working with one of these organizations to send off a flight, welcome home a flight or choose another way to volunteer. This is rewarding no matter if you volunteer or cheer! Do you know of a veteran who would enjoy this? Would you like to volunteer as a Guardian? Find these groups on Facebook, or go to their websites to determine how your Club can become involved in a flight at: triadhonorflight.org or honorflightcfa.org.

Enthusiastic airport greetings!

2024 Presidential Forum

In an historic joint effort, the South Carolina and North Carolina Federations of Republican Women held a "For Women, By Women" Presidential Forum at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC, just across the state line from Charlotte, NC. Thank you, Peggy Upchurch, SCFRW President, for the brilliant idea.

(L to R: Kay Wildt, Gov. Ron DeSantis, Peggy Upchurch, President SCFRW)

Thanks to team members from SCFRW: LaDonna Riggs, Racine Cooper, Tea Hoffmann, Carol Herring. NCFRW members: Pat Smith, Lorena Castillo-Ritz, Erica Vedeikis, Melinda Suddes, Desiree Miller, Elsa Karman.

Drawing a crowd of 350 and live-streamed, NewsNation's Blake Burman, hosted the event with Governors Ron DeSantis and Asa Hutchinson. Jennifer Stefano, Chief Strategist and VP at Commonwealth Foundation, was Mistress of Ceremonies. Also speaking were Israeli Consul General of Israel to the Southeastern US, Mrs. Anat Sultan-Davon, accompanied by Arlene Samuels, CBN Israeli Journalist, and Robert Cahaly, Trafalgar Group Pollster.

The link below is to the two-hour Forum recording on Facebook. Israeli Consul General Sultan-Davon requested us to show a two-minute video filmed by Hamas as they attacked Israeli citizens. It is very disturbing footage of savage atrocities. The two-minute Hamas film is at the very end of the event from 1:53 to 1:55.

Community Board for senior citizens needs volunteers

In every state, county and community, local volunteer boards and commissions made up of citizens like you and me make decisions that affect priorities in spending and in legislation. Research what boards and commissions are in your community and recruit club members for positions that affect the quality of life in your community.

One such nonpartisan board with openings is the North Carolina Senior Tar Heel Legislature, created by the NC General Assembly to listen to community concerns and give a "voice" to senior citizens. Each of NC's 100 counties has a Delegate and Alternate who must be over 60 years of age.

Delegates and Alternates meet three times a year to determine local and regional needs and priorities for statewide meetings. Members work to create a state where Seniors can age with dignity and respect, and each of us can play a role.

There are many openings for alternates across the state, but these counties have NO representation at all: Anson, Beaufort, Clay, Columbus, Craven, Franklin, Gates, Graham, Henderson, Hoke, Iredell, Lee, Martin, McDowell, Moore, Polk, Richmond, Swain, Transylvania, Tyrrell.

STHL is a nonpartisan organization, but it needs more conservative voices. If you or anyone you know is interested, email: Kathryn Lawler, klawler147@gmail.com

Club news

RW of Chapel Hill Chatham

Representing Club President Bonnie O'Neill, who was away, VP Terri Tyson accepted the club's NFRW Diamond Award on her behalf from Kay Wildt.

The Diamond Award is difficult to achieve and requires many hours of effort. RWCHC is one of 31 clubs in NC that received this award signifying their club is performing at the highest level.

Donna Stewart represented her club at the NFRW Convention in Oklahoma City. Donna gave a recounting of the moment Kay called for the Point of Order that stunned the convention.
