NCC programs among those tapped for

Administration's Pittsburgh Workforce Hub

NCC President and CEO Neil Ashbaugh was among the invitees on Nov. 8 when First Lady Jill Biden was in Pittsburgh for Workforce Hub convenings, announcing commitments to equitable workforce development from dozens of Hub collaborators.

In May, the Biden-Harris Administration named Pittsburgh one of five Workforce Hubs where President Biden’s Investing in America agenda are catalyzing historic private and public investments and creating good-paying jobs to expand Registered Apprenticeships and pre-apprenticeships and increase recruitment from underserved communities.

As part of the Pittsburgh Workforce Hub, the ARM Institute and New Century Careers have launched a rapid employer-driven training program to help at least 40 dislocated workers per year to re-enter the workforce in good-quality, high-demand manufacturing jobs. Workers and employers can connect through roboticscareer.org, a new resource for robotics training and employment opportunities in Southwestern Pennsylvania and beyond. NCC also will offer access to advanced manufacturing training in high-need neighborhoods in 2024 — expanding its existing programming by 50 percent—with a key focus on preparing job seekers for 3D/additive manufacturing and robotics careers.

Trainee Profile: Anthony H's journey from telecommunications

to manufacturing training at New Century Careers

Growing up in Homewood and working in his dad’s auto repair shop near their home piqued Anthony’s interest in machines at an early age. As a teen, he also worked in a Penn Hills machine shop.

But his career took a turn when an uncle interested him in a job with Verizon, where he learned telecommunications, IT and structural labeling, later becoming a field construction manager for Dish Wireless supervising a tri-state territory. However, following a series of company mergers, Anthony was laid off.

Ironically, the next step in Anthony’s career came from John Alexander, NCC’s facilities and instructor supervisor, who lived across the street from that family auto repair shop and is Anthony’s long-time friend. “John always talked about New Century Careers but the possibilities for me didn’t click until I was laid off,” he said.

Anthony enrolled in the August 2023 Manufacturing 2000 cohort. Having already earned three NIMS credentials, he is well on his way to integrating a lifetime of creating things with his hands into a sustainable career in advanced manufacturing. Now working on lathes and mills, Anthony can see crossovers from his auto body work. “My grandfather, dad and uncle all were drag racers at the former Heidelberg Raceway and I worked on their cars,” he explained. “Often, the part we needed for the Chevy Vega was no longer available or we needed it fast. So we made our own brackets, gussets and did bead work,” he added.

Anthony tells anyone considering New Century Careers, “It’s definitely a good opportunity to learn a skill for free. As I was brushing up on my algebra for the math test, I even learned cool things about measurements and decimals that have other applications.”

United Way of Southwestern PA features

New Century Careers trainee

A recent United Way of Southwestern PA video featured a testimonial by New Century Careers trainee Tim Williams. Tim always liked working with his hands and recalled enjoying a metalworking shop class back in high school and being good at it. So when he saw a posting on an educational resource board about the tuition-free Manufacturing 2000 machinist training program offered by New Century Careers and supported by United Way, he thought, “This could be my thing.”

National Apprenticeship Week with outreach activities

NCC participates in Discovery Day 2023 hosted by the Pittsburgh Robotics Network

For National Apprenticeship Week (November 13-19), New Century Careers participated in multiple outreach events in Southwestern PA. One of these events included Pittsburgh Robotics Discovery Day which featured over 4,000+ attendees and 130+ exhibitors. NCC staff demonstrated what will be taught through the Manufacturing 2000 program and their goals are for student success.
