November Water Update

You may have read recently that the City completed transactions on securing additional water rights for Cedar Valley. We all love where we live, but there are advantages and disadvantages to living in a closed basin. There are no rivers flowing into or out of our basin. We have what we have and must utilize it the best way we can.

These purchases of water are historical and forward-thinking. Historical because we bought a very large and old water right from 1860.  Forward-thinking because we bought a water right from Basin 71 out in the Iron Springs area or Beryl Valley. This is an infusion from another basin and I am extremely grateful for the opportunity that sprang up “suddenly” and that we were able to capitalize on quickly with the council’s support.  All our residents can sleep better tonight knowing that steps have been taken to protect our water needs well into the future.  This is what I like to call, “paper water.”

Now for the actual water and how we get it here. I have authorized a new test well 2.5 miles north and east of the Waste Water Treatment Plant.  I will be referring to this area as “Mud Springs.”  This is another basin like Quichapa. I believe it is even better than Quichapa. I believe that Quichapa is fed by the Bumblebee Mountains. Mud Springs is fed from the valley floor and also the large range to the north. The north range contributes 20% of the basin’s water and we are not using any of it. Assuming a good report from the Mud Springs well is returned on the quality, we can produce a significant amount of water for our city’s uses.

I have also authorized a second test well in Cedar Canyon. This well will aim for an alluvial under Coal Creek. If this well is successful we could drill several wells in this area and supply a pipe to Cedar.

All our efforts in Cedar Canyon will necessitate a new pipeline down the canyon to replace the small old one we have now. With great spring flow, a new high production well at Martins flat, and a well field just below Milts Restaurant, a substantial amount of water could be obtained for Cedar. Cedar City owns a significant amount of coal creek flow. Stay tuned, more to come!

DONATE TO CEDAR CITY POLICE: SHOP WITH A COP

Every year, Cedar City Police Department chooses a day in December to shop alongside community youth who need a little extra help. Various agencies and organizations in the area choose to fundraise money to help make this event possible, one being the Holiday Tree Jubilee.

Police officers usually spend a morning at Walmart, taking the kids around to buy a pair of shoes, gifts for their families, or themselves. Monetary donations are welcome from anyone in the community by calling the Police Department headquarters, or going in person to make a donation.

At this time, no physical donations are accepted, but any and all monetary donations are welcome especially by supporting local events like the Holiday Tree Jubilee.
