Meet monthly with friends to discuss great short fiction from The Best Short Stories 2024: The O. Henry Prize Winners. This collection contains twenty prizewinning stories chosen from thousands published in magazines over the previous year. Each meeting will cover 1-2 short stories.

Writing the Story in Photos:
An Abbreviated Workshop with Mark Chester

Join photographer Mark Chester and learn the basics about how to tell a story through photos.
Participants will:
- Merge elements of photos and words into a narrative.
- Learn how to transfer personal experiences and observations, to assemble a coherent story that has touched you in some way.
- Discuss editing photographs: which ones enhance the story.
- Embellish your photos with words through in-class writing and discussion.
- Learn how to develop the story with an evocative beginning, middle, and end that keeps the reader curious.
Participants will need to bring 10-20 photographs to the workshop.
Recommended pre-class reading:
On Writing Well by William Zinsser. Copies will be made available for checkout at Sturgis Library.

Acting coach Sara-Ann P. Semedo is back by popular demand! Join this fun, free acting workshop series to celebrate diverse voices, gain or hone acting skills, and participate in a live performance here at Sturgis Library.
Participants will select a piece of culturally diverse poetry, monologue, or soliloquy and rehearse it over the course of two workshops before performing it live for family, friends, and community members.

Please bring a short list of novels you would like the group to read and we will vote on what to read next. Think of fiction that explores the human condition in all its complexity. Reach for books that push us to see things from new perspectives or confront challenging history, social structures, or emotions. We want books that take us to new places and new depths!

Brownies and Bracelets: An Evening of Gratitude | |

Kiddos of all ages are invited to Sturgis Library to snack on brownies while making bracelets to benefit The Cape Wildlife Center help local wildlife in need.
Bracelets will be hung on Sturgis Library’s Gratitude Tree and sold at the library through the month of November. All proceeds will go directly to the Wildlife Center.
Drop in! Registration is not required.
