2024 Data Book Presents Details about Cuyahoga County

Since 2020, County Planning's Data Book series has provided detailed information about Cuyahoga County and its communities in an easy-to-understand format. The expanded 2024 edition includes several new indicators, including a new section on health data. The other sections cover demographic, economic, housing, land use, and transportation data. Examples of new indicators include:

  • Single-parent households, an important social determinant of heath
  • New developments, places that have seen significant increase in value due to new construction
  • Housing cost burden, households that spend more than 30% of their incomes on housing costs
  • Land cover, a description of the types of physical materials on an area's surface.

To make them easier to understand, each indicator in the Data Book is presented in tables, a graph, and one or more maps. The data was obtained from a variety of high-quality sources, including the U.S. Census Bureau, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Ohio Department of Transportation, several local data providers, and from County Planning initiatives.

If you've used the Data Book in your work, we'd love to hear from you. Please tell us how you've used it and if you have ideas about improvements or new topics for the next edition. Be on the lookout for the next edition in 2025!

Enhanced Greenprint Offers More Data and Features

Map from the Greenprint Explorer showing tree canopy and urban heat islands

The Cuyahoga County Greenprint is one of County Planning's longest-running and most popular resources. First developed in 2002 as a series of static PDF maps supported by topical narratives, the Greenprint has evolved into a modern, interactive web application supported by updated and comprehensive guidance.

The Greenprint includes a collection of web-based tools to help planners, citizens, and community leaders make informed decisions about their natural and community assets. With these tools, users can see their current natural and physical assets, learn about current best practices, and create maps and files needed for grant applications, plan development, meeting presentations, and other nature-enhancing work.

The Greenprint Explorer application draws directly from a variety of authoritative sources, including FEMA Flood Hazard Areas, wetlands, and our own Urban Tree Canopy Assessment and Cuyahoga Greenways Plan. The newest elements include more social data such as bike and pedestrian safety, socio-economic data, and equity indicators.

Updated tools in the application allow for analysis of custom study areas, drawing and measurement, and even the addition of user-supplied map layers.

Orange Village Survey Reveals Community Priorities

In partnership with Orange Village, County Planning recently completed the 2024 Orange Village Community-Wide Survey. This survey compiled input from Village residents and businesses on topics relating to community values, issues, services, facilities, and overall direction of the Village. County Planning had previously completed Orange Village Community Surveys in 2007 and 2014, allowing for County Planning and Orange Village to identify key data trends over time.

"Orange Village sought a partner to assist us in developing and producing a community-wide survey," said Mayor Judson A. Kline. "The Cuyahoga County Planning Commission staff was a knowledgeable and effective collaborator in the process, who answered our every need and delivered a great and useful product that will aid us in making decisions in building the community we want for our residents."

The final survey results include responses from 432 adult residents of Orange Village, corresponding to 16.7% of the community's total adult population. The survey consisted of 39 questions organized into seven topic areas and provided community views on values, sustainability, and future infrastructure investment.

Key findings of the survey include:

  • 96.8% of respondents rate their overall quality of life as good or excellent
  • 84.9% of respondents rated the overall quality of amenities and events as good or excellent
  • 89.3% of respondents rated the overall quality of communication and services as good or excellent

Learn About ADUs on November 18th

We're hosting a webinar about Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. on November 18th, in partnership with the City of Cleveland Heights, APA Ohio Cleveland Section, and the Northeast Ohio First Suburbs Consortium.

Nationally, the need and demand for ADUs is growing. However, the majority of Cuyahoga County's 59 municipalities do not allow ADUs as a permissible housing type, potentially limiting residents’ options. This webinar will focus on the benefits ADUs can provide and outline the trends driving the shift towards ADUs. Additionally, listen to a panel discussion from one Cuyahoga County Community taking the initiative to make ADUs a functional, attainable, and affordable housing option for its residents.
