October has been a busy month for the Valdese Parks and Recreation Department. The month started in Helene’s aftermath, and department staff and volunteers spent a lot of time working to get parks and facilities back up and open for our community. Community members took advantage of our locker room facilities and gym lobby to have a hot shower and to charge devices, and we were more than happy to help. The storm caused some disruption to our programming, but we were able to open much sooner than some of our partners and colleagues who suffered much greater damage than we did.
As a result of the storm, youth athletics games were rescheduled. Ultimately, our soccer season has wrapped up after making up games. Football and cheerleading is still going until mid-November, and we’re excited our kids are back and able to play. We have also had a lot of fun the past two months with our Homeschool PE program, and we are looking forward to another offering in 2025. We have just started sign-ups for this winter’s youth basketball and micro-basketball (5-6 year olds) programs.
