Tulane to lead new CDC Center for Public Health Emergency Preparedness across South Central US

The Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine at Tulane University joins Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Columbia and six other leading universities as the site of one of a series of new regional centers the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is establishing around the country to help regions better prepare for future pandemics and other public health emergencies.

The Region 6 Center for Health Security and Response Readiness will address critical gaps in crisis preparedness in public health systems across Louisiana, Arkansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and 68 federally recognized tribal nations. Dr. Kerstin Reinschmidt presents poster at 2024 APHA Conference

Kerstin M. Reinschmidt, PhD, MPH

Dr. Kerstin Reinschmidt, Associate Professor in the Department of Health Promotion Sciences in the Hudson College of Public Health at The University of Oklahoma

Health Sciences Center, showcased a decade-long analysis of field placements for public health students at the 2024 American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Meeting and Expo held in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her poster, titled Field Placements of Public Health Students in Oklahoma to Complete Academic Program Requirements: A 10-Year Review and Implications for Future Placement, examined data from Oklahoma-based placements arranged through Public Health Training Centers, which provide compensated, HRSA-aligned opportunities balancing the needs of students and partner organizations.

Through descriptive statistics, Dr. Reinschmidt's analysis revealed that 51 students completed placements over the past ten years, primarily in health promotion sciences (33%) and epidemiology (26%) disciplines. Most placements were within health sciences centers (39%), American Indian organizations (22%), and health departments (20%), with a strong focus on underserved populations and health equity.

The presentation also featured qualitative stories of impact, highlighting five thematic insights into student experiences. Findings underscored the mutual benefits for both students and communities served, and Dr. Reinschmidt's analysis recommends expanding placement sites and addressing emerging public health issues to further strengthen this impactful program.
