Election Day

Next Tuesday, November 5th, is our Election Day. Don't forget to get out and vote! If you have any questions, please reach out to our City Clerk's office or visit the the Elections page on the city's website here.

Council Update

We had two Council Meetings in October, these are some of the items we took action on:

  • City Council adopted an ordinance amending Sections 20.21.1 and 20.21.2 of the Oceanside City Code related to the City’s regulation of public encampment and the storage of personal property in public places. Introduced on October 9, 2024, 4-1 (Joyce - no).

  • City Council adopted a resolution approving a plan of finance, including the issuance of revenue bonds by the California Municipal Finance Authority, in an aggregate principal amount not to exceed $45,000,000, to finance and refinance the acquisition, construction, development and equipping of a 111-unit qualified residential rental project (the “Project”) to be owned and operated by the Borrower and located at 2136 South El Camino Real within the City of Oceanside, California. I would also like to add that there is no financial responsibility for the city in this project. Approved 4-0, Joyce Absent.

  • Request by Councilmember Joyce and Mayor Sanchez to direct staff to re-establish the Oceanside Youth Commission. The scope of work for the commission would include making suggestions to City Council on youth-related issues and providing a youth perspective on the ongoing work of our City. This opportunity would allow youth from our city to feel empowered to engage and participate with local government as well as provides City officials with the opportunity to hear and address our youth’s concerns. It is anticipated that staff will bring this back to the Council as we move into 2025. Approved 5-0.

Our next City Council meeting will be on Wednesday, Nov. 6th, 2024 at 5:00pm.

Getting Out in the Community in September

I had the opportunity to attend a fundraiser for Oceanside's Finest Youth Basketball Program. Oceanside's Finest is Southern California's premier youth basketball organization, focused on teaching the fundamentals of the game while being 100% cost-free for all kids. A big thank you to Donald Yasukochi and his team for all the incredible work they do to continue this program. If you would like to contribute as well, please follow this link to make a donation!

The Oceanside Fire Department held an Open House in October. There was a big crowd who came out to meet our Fire Chief, Dave Parsons, learn how to use a fire extinguisher, see the Fire Engine and equipment up close! We hope you enjoyed the delicious pancake breakfast. Thank you to everyone who came out to support our Fire Department and learn about the amazing work they do. Additionally thank you to the Fire Department for hosting a great event!

In October, I also attended the Cal Cities Annual Conference and Expo on behalf of the city. This was a great opportunity for me to attend educational & innovative leadership sessions to learn the latest knowledge, resources, and tools used to advance communities and assist officials in daily roles and operations within their cities. Additionally, I enjoyed meeting with other key decision makers across the state to hear how things are done in other cities who may face similar issues we face here in Oceanside. I look forward to attending again next year! Thank you to the League of California Cities for hosting a great conference!

KOCT hosted a party to celebrate the birthday of the studio and raise funds to continue providing unbiased, public broadcasting here in Oceanside. Thank you to KOCT for a great night of amazing night of live music, dining by VANC, dancing, raffles and the big auction. Follow this link to join me in contributing!

The Friends of Oceanside Library held an Open House for Jane & Evie's Used Books in celebration of National Friends of Libraries Week. This event was very fun, consisting of live music, refreshments, and books, books, books! I highly encourage you to check out Jane & Evie's Used Book Store downtown right across from the Civic Center Library! There are many great books and other media formats like DVD's and CD's for very low prices! If you would like to help contribute, follow this link to donate to the Friends of Oceanside Public Library!

The North County Transit District recently held a ground breaking ceremony for a Hydrogen Fueling Station that will begin serving North County Transit District buses in Oceanside next summer. I was joined by other North County leaders to celebrate this big step towards zero-emission buses here in Oceanside. Thank you to Congressman Mike Levin for securing $1.72 million for this great project.

The Friends of Oceanside Dia De Los Muertos hosted the 23rd Annual Dia de los Muertos Festival downtown last month! This incredibly fun event featured altars, arts & crafts, the por siempre car show, a chalk cemetery and so much more! If you missed it this year, be sure to put it on the calendar for next year!

Save Your Community's Citrus

The California citrus we all know and love is at risk. A devastating plant disease called Huanglongbing, also known as HLB, has been found in Southern California. HLB kills citrus trees and there is no cure. Diseased trees produce bitter, hard and lopsided fruit, and eventually die. The disease is spread by a pest called the Asian citrus psyllid as it feeds on the leaves of citrus trees. Psyllids are small, about the size of an aphid, and can be seen on the small, tender, new leaves of citrus trees. The best way to protect California citrus from the disease is to stop the spread of the pest. Follow this link for more information on how to help protect our community from this tree disease.
