Monterey Design Conference
October 25 - 27, 2024 | Asilomar Conference Grounds, Pacific Grove, California
Reflections and Highlights on the Monterey Design Conference 2024
Jorge Garcia, Assoc. AIA
This October 25–27, I had the privilege of attending my first Monterey Design Conference (MDC), hosted by AIA California at the historic Asilomar Conference Grounds. From the breathtaking setting designed by Julia Morgan to the intimate scale of the event, MDC delivered a conference experience unlike any I’ve attended before.
The beautiful Merrill Hall, with its abundant natural light and open-air atmosphere, set the tone for a uniquely engaging event. The ability to step outside between sessions, feel the ocean breeze, and process the thought-provoking presentations made this conference especially invigorating. Conversations with new acquaintances were enriching, and the small size of the conference allowed for meaningful exchanges that larger events often lack.
These are my Highlights:
-
Housing Panels: A dedicated panel featuring Dana Cuff, Phoebe Yee, Cory Henry, and Kevin Daly delved into housing, urbanism, and the essential role architects must play in shaping policy. Their call for architects to design frameworks, not just ideas, was a powerful takeaway.
-
Tatiana Bilbao’s Vision: Her focus on housing and spaces that genuinely support culture and community was inspiring.
- Pierluigi Serrano in a mezmerizing conversation with EHDD Architecture founder Chuck Davis, that deserved a standing ovation.
-
Frederick Fisher and Reuse:Fisher brought building reuse into the conversation meaningfully, highlighting the Santa Monica City Hall project’s pursuit of the rigorous Living Building Challenge.
-
Collaboration Across Disciplines:Many projects emphasized the value of collaboration between architecture and landscape architecture, signaling a positive shift toward integrated, resilient design approaches.
MDC 2024 was an unforgettable experience, and I look forward to attending again.

Ocotillo Lodge Architectural Tour and Social Recap
🌵 On Wednesday, October 23rd, AIA California Desert Chapter hosted a truly unforgettable DeserTecture Tour at the iconic Ocotillo Lodge, designed in 1956 by William Krisel and Dan Palmer. This architectural gem, with its mid-century modern charm, provided the perfect backdrop for a night of learning, networking, and fun.
The evening featured an engaging presentation by Todd Verwers, AIACDC Board Member, who shared insights into the recent renovation he led, which was showcased during Modernism Week 2024. Attendees explored the lodge's beautiful grounds, admired the stunning mountain views, and took in the iconic keyhole-shaped pool and the charming outdoor Sunshine Bar.
We’re so thankful to our members, sponsors, and new friends for making this event a success. Your enthusiasm, participation, and shared ideas for future events and chapter activities continue to inspire us. The evening’s highlight for many? A sneak peek into the secret Rat Pack Bar tucked behind the reception area—a nostalgic nod to the lodge's storied past! 🍸
Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make this event special. We’re already looking forward to our next gathering and can’t wait to see you there!

Whitewater Legacy: Preserving the Past, Flowing Forward
On Saturday, November 16th, we embarked on an inspiring journey through the breathtaking Whitewater/San Gorgonio Pass area. The "Whitewater Legacy: Preserving the Past, Flowing Forward" event was a unique opportunity to step out of traditional learning spaces and into the great outdoors, where history, nature, and architecture intersected in meaningful ways.
Participants explored the rich legacy of our valley, reflecting on the challenges and triumphs that have shaped our profession and community. The hike-and-learn format fostered a deep connection with the landscapes and stories of the past, all while strengthening camaraderie and sparking new professional connections.
This event was a vivid reminder that preserving history is not just about honoring the past—it’s about finding inspiration to guide our future. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this memorable day, and for helping to make it a success!
We look forward to more opportunities to engage, learn, and grow together in the stunning natural settings that surround us.

A Note From our President, Kathy Friedle...
Hello California Desert Members!
Winter is coming! (yay!) As the temperature cooled over the last month we were finally able to take advantage of some outdoor socializing and outdoor architectural touring.
Our Ocotillo Lodge tour and social hosted by CD member Todd Verwers was well attended and it was easy to imagine Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack hanging out around that gigantic key-hole shaped pool and the fabulous Sunshine Bar. It’s always a treat to see spaces designed by our members. Todd’s unit (which was on the Modernism Week Tour last year) was detailed meticulously and made the most of 500 sf. I heard several people on the tour saying “I’d love to live there!” (I felt the same.)
Our second social / educational meet up was a new kind of adventure for us. We teamed up with the Long Beach / South Bay Chapter for a hike and tour at the gorgeous Whitewater Preserve. Our tour was led by the Jack Thompson - Director of The Wildlands Conservancy. We then ventured over the mountain to the home of Nader Ghassemlou (who was a member of LB/SB and is now a member of California Desert – lucky us!). Our speaker at this part of the event was Kerry Berman (Certified Interpretive Guide) who took us from Jurassic Park Days to present day in under 30 minutes. (No joke!) We rounded out the day taking in the expansive view at Nader’s home and marveled at the windmills above us and below us! I think it’s safe to say everyone was in awe of that incredible view.
Throughout 2024, we’ve introduced all sorts of new learning and social opportunities in order the enrich the experience of our Chapter members. With all of these events, and in all that we do as a Chapter, I’d like to recognize and give a BIG shout out to our Executive Directors – who really are the glue to make all of this happen. In my photo this month, say hello to Kristine Hammond (Executive Director of LB/SB) and Jorge Garcia (Executive Director of CD) who work tirelessly for our Chapters.
We’ve got one more event planned for this year. Our annual meeting is on Thursday, December 5th at the office of Lance O’Donnell from o2 Architecture (5-7 pm). Come and join us for some holiday cheer, hear about what we’ve accomplished this year, chat about ideas for next year and vote on the upcoming board members for 2025.
Hope to see you there!
Thanks,
Kathy Friedle, Assoc. AIA
